ZJ D35 to D44a swap whats needed

My D35 is on its way out. I found a D44a out of a 98 ZJ and from what it looks like ill need the rear obviously and the driveshaft to do the swap. Am i missing anything? The 98 is a limited 5.2 my 96 is a leredo 4.0 If i go through with it ill swap the front 30 in also since i have 3.55 gears and the D44 has 3.73 gears.

You pretty much unbolt the old axle and swap the new one in. Make sure the gears are the same front and rear. If they aren't and you have the all time 4wd 249 TC you'll need to take off the front driveshaft till you have the same gears.

I just did 44a>44a on my 5.9 recently. Your brakes will swap over from your 35 to your 44a, so I would strongly suggest doing what you can to avoid having to bleed them. I left all of the lines attached still to avoid this. Just like anything else, hit everything with PB blaster as far as you can in advance as it will absolutley make your life easier. I would suggest changin your ebrake shoes as well as they are likely toast on the 44a and will be seized if it was sitting outside for any period of time.

blackjack12982 great write up in that link but the ZJ and WJ have a totally different rear end so it may not all be the same as far as problems and such are concerned.

Basic principal is the same...I don't know of anything (aside from suspension connections) that would be different.

OK so to do the swap id use the ZJ D44a rear with the matching driveshaft from that doner truck and im set. No need for a custom shaft or anything like that. Sound about right?

Not sure if this would work due to the output of the 249 being different than the 242 . . . unless you already have the 249 in your Laredo.

I don't see why you couldn't aside from it could potentially be a PITA, and you might get vibrations from using parts from two different driveshafts. I could be wrong though.

Nothing is ever simple lol I dont think they balance the DS with the yoke on it. Simply replacing a u-joint ould throw that off if that was the case. However i may also be wrong.

if the front dana 30 out of the doner is good then you don't even have to bother doing the ring and pinyin swap could make things a lot easier
