I'm sure millions have! If you're looking at replaceing just the boots and not the cv joint, you don't need to remove the nut on the axle end. If you're replaceing the joint itself, remove the nut before removing hub and axle.

Just did mine in the spring, and my wifes shortly after that.

I also repacked the joints. Both drive almost like new. The Haynes manual has a good write up on the procedure. I would recommend using some PB Blaster a day ahead of time to help loosen the bolts (3 ea on the steering knuckle assembly).

Boots - $13 ea
Extra grease -$5
Clamp tool - $11

On my ZJ I spent about 4 hours. My wifes WJ was about 2 hours. (learning curve)
Have alot of rags and some degreaser to clean the joint bearings and races.

HTH,
Jim

I have to agree here. I did mine and replaced the whole thing, not just the boot. When I posed this question I was told that by replacing the whole thing it would last longer. If you just replace the boots it was more likely that they would go out sooner. It wasn't a horrible task and didn't cost too much. Took us about 2 1/2 hours. I am not too mechanically inclined so it may be possible to do it faster. We just got the full axles at Autozone and it was pretty straight forward.

Yes i totally understand that just replacing them is the best route... but see i'm putting in a 2" BB and thought since that i was already there maybe it was a good idea to just put new boots on. They are NOT clicking or causing me any problems!, i was just wondering if it would be a good idea since i will be off-roading the ZJ and towing my ATV's with it now.

Why not upgrade when you do it and get some U-jointed shafts? You could always rebuild the CV shafts for use as temporary spares then, too.
