ZJ/WJ/WK body modification ideas - what's yours?

Here's the deal for all you ZJ/WJ/WK owners...

You've read my recent posts about the custom ZJ hood group buy and the 5.9-style louvers going into production. I now have a relationship with a manufacturer that is interested in developing an entire line of body add-ons just for us Jeepers.

The initial focus will be ZJ, WJ, and WK owners with potential to branch into other models later this year. This is a huge opportunity since there are few if any resources for custom body add-ons for our vehicles.

Less than a week ago I asked you all for your opinion of an idea that I had for my ZJ - a custom cowl induction hood. After a little research I discovered how much time, money, and expertise the project would require and I thought my idea was dead in the water. I called local tooling shops, but the shops wouldn't even touch the idea for less than several thousand dollars up front (tooling is very expensive). By chance, a couple days ago I stumbled across a reputable manufacturer willing to work with us as long as we could find other Jeep owners interested in the same product. And so the relationship was born.

How does it work?

If we have an idea, and we can find a minimum number of fellow Jeepers who want in on the product, for example a custom set of ZJ fender flares, then the manufacturer would be willing to invest in the tooling, and manufacturer the product.

A traditional "group buy" (e.g. www.4x4groupbuy.com) typically involves a product that is already in production, and relies on a volume purchase to negotiate a lower price. In contrast, this is an opportunity for us to turn custom body concepts into reality -- so long as we find enough like-minded buyers.

Want a one-piece flip up front end for your ZJ? Find enough people and I'll help make it happen. I kid you not.

I wanted the cowl hood so bad I could taste the fiberglass....and now I have nearly half the number of people needed in order to place the group buy. What would have cost me god knows how much in time and money to attempt to make on my own, I'll be able to buy -- professionally crafted -- for less than $600.

Now tell me that isn't cool!!

Now the real fun begins. I've already discussed Renegade-style ZJ fender flares, custom rocker panels, custom lightbars, the cowl hood, and the 5.9 louvers.

If you'd like to contribute your ideas, I would like to make a proposal to the moderators. Can we create a forum for the ideas under Grand Cherokee Forum or under the Off-road Performance section (similar to the other sub-forums such as Fab Shop) where members can contribute proposals/ideas? Other members could then indicate their interest in the ideas. And with enough interest we could pitch an idea to the manufacturer. With luck, they'll make the part for us. Your thoughts?

DSM, the WJ Renegade-style fender flares are already in the works. In fact, the manufacturer is already planning to lay out a set from the original mold so I can take pictures to post here on the JeepForum.

Now if only I had a WJ on which to install them. Any local volunteers? I'm serious.

Keep in mind it's not a mass-produced fender (in fact there's nowhere on the planet where you can buy it right now except right here). From my initial conversations, I got the impression the complete set would run no less than $600. Not bad considering a comparable set of mass-produced flares for the XJ run nearly $400 (http://www.rocky-road.com/xjflare.html). As time goes by, and there's increased interest from WJ owners, I imagine the price will come down a bit, but not much. It's a complex part to make.

When you consider the average cost these days of a decent lift kit, a decent push bar or bumper, a roof rack, and wheel/tire combos, it's still a great price. I dropped that much on a set of tires alone.

Anything specific Mike? Have a sketch? I've been toying with a special low-profile design that hugs the ZJ roofline, mounts to the existing roof rails, and uses small, but powerful 100+W lamps. I'll see if I can scan my own sketches this weekend.

LOL!!

Man I could have sworn that said $400 a few minutes ago.

Tell you what, since I don't own a WJ I couldn't use a set of flares like that. But if you help find others who are interested, I'll see what they can do as far as a price based on that volume. Assuming they can use the original High and Mighty mold still (it's been in storage since that project was completed over a year ago), they might go for it. No promises.

Isn't there a snorkel already on the market for a ZJ and WJ? I'm pretty sure there is.

But if you're looking for something more unique, say a different shape, or mounting configuration, post here and we'll see what other members think if it.

Just to let you in on how I'd go about finding the people....

WJs already come with a pretty impressive fender flare. The High and Mighty flares you desire are much wider and more aggressive. They were adapted from the Liberty. Those flares would appeal to WJ owners running a much larger or wider tire. They'd look plain silly mounted on something with tires as small as mine (245-70R16s). So you might search cardomain, or nagca and look for rigs that meet those criteria. Find them, and see if they're interested in those flares.

I don't think there are any snorkels for Grand Cherokees. The only one I've ever seen was a do-it-yourself project on NAGCA.com... ZJ Snorkel

The person states in the write-up.."Besides, everybody knows there is no snorkel for Grands…" blah blah blah

So hopefully others will throw in some ideas on how to make one or just copy the write-up and mass produce it.

Very interesting! I was not aware of the lack of a ZJ snorkel. Anyone else looking for a ZJ snorkel?

Joe, the Wk on WKJEEP.COM has some cool looking side vents... something like that might look cool on a ZJ.
