ZJ auto hard to get out of park! HELP plz..

Hello, My daughter has a '96 Grand Cherokee, automatic, 4.0, 4X4 (all stock). Well, she's having problems getting the shifter to go from park to any other gear. It finally goes into gear from park, but not until you've tried pushing that little thumb thing on the shifter several times. It seems to be getting stuck or something, then it finally goes into gear and it's fine...until she parks again, then it gets stuck all over again. She's sometimes sits for several minutes trying to get it into gear or she'll have to ask someone (sometimes a stranger...which is dangerous) to help her get it into gear when she's away from our house. Does anyone know what the problem could be? I checked the linkage and none of that is binding. The tranny shifts fine when she's driving it. It just seems to be getting stuck in park! Please help! Thanks....

Its either the brake interlock(could be a brake switch going out) or the accidental shift prevention button is worn. If she's only having trouble in park, I'd put my money on the brake interlock.

Yeah, it only messes up when she's in park then trying to put it into gear. Thanks, I'll look into that.
