Zj 1998 5.9l

I need to replace transfercase 249 last bearing. It is after Viscous coupling. I read that 1998 5.9L model has stronger output than others. How it is tronger?

Question: Is bearing inner diameter still same than other models?

Its the input shaft thats stronger. They used more gears around the sun gear I believe its called. The 242's had 3, the 249 has 6, as well the teeth are cut on a different angle. You will need to use the front half of the 249 case, and input shaft, with the rest of the innards of the 242 and rear half of the case of the 242 if you are doing a 242 swap.

No swap

I just want to put new bearing (last one). I am happy with my transfer case. I order one, but new bearing inner diameter was 0,4 mm too small. Very little but enought, too small.

If last bearing is same in 5.4L and 5.9L transfer case, I have wrong bearing (not any Jeep). I they are not, I have 5.2L bearing.

As far as I know all 96 to 98 249's are the same. Quite a few years ago I ordered a complete rebuild kit for a plain old 249 & everything fit just fine.

I've never heard of the 5.9 249 being heavy duty compared to a reg 98 ZJ. The only thing published was the heaavy duty rear driveshaft.

I'm going to agree with Colorado here. And also say that the 249 and the 242 both use 3 sun gears in the planetary gear set up.
There was a gear cut change around 94/95. and using a "split case" set up is the way around that.

5.9 drive shaft is a heavier shaft along with a different length due to the transmition being longer.

Somebodies books are off. Call a dealer and get a dealer part number and Napa will match it up for you.

I am going based off of the 249>242 swap I did, and my buddy did. Hes got a 95, which only had 3 sun gears in his 249, and mine had 6. I cannot find any documents on this either. I have another buddy with a 5.9 going to be doing his soon as well, we will look and see if its the same as mine. I can see them doing it for the extra power of the 5.9.

Sorry guys. For the life of me I can't remember how many sun gears there were on my 249. It's been too long since I tore into it.

the 249 is three...231,242,249 all have three planetaries to the one sun gear.
perhaps you're thinking of the center diff on the 242, which has 6 planetary gears.

The gears on this are the sun gears correct? I am telling you, mine had 6 gears on it, unlike this one in the picture. Perhaps I am just lucky, who knows.

I think the HD 242 out of a Durango has 6. The Hummer also had the HD 242.
