ZJ 180k I6 . . . Thoughts?

My buddy is looking at buying this for his "work truck" . . They're asking $1500. A few cosmetic issues and the shocks for the hatch. He also mentioned not being able to open drivers door without using the key. He has an 80 mile a day commute. What do u guys think? Things to look for/consider before buying?? Thanks!!

I'd listen to motor run listen for any knocking or abnormal noises or smoking. Also pull dip stick on oil and trans fluid jus to make sure they look good if those things check out and it drives good I'd give 1500 in a heart beat

Pull oil cap and check for sluge in the valve cover.

I've heard the engine will run forever but the trans is what you have to worry about. Besides the fluid any other tell tale signs to look for?

smell the trans fluid. if it smells and/or looks burnt, run away

also check the pass floor and make sure it isn't wet under the carpet.... if it is the fix is easy but check the metal floor pan for rust. mine was rusted straight threw under the carpet.

Noted. Thanks. And I read thru stickies and glanced over FAQS since everyone will just look over this post and dismiss it with disgust. Haha. I know they're 15-20 yrs old but is there a buyers guide to a ZJ?? I may have missed it but I tried.

I hear Jeep and commuter and I cant help but shake my head.....

Beyond that I'd make sure the oil pressure is good, check for frame damage, major rust, non working electrical items (windows/locks/stereo/hvac), smell the tranny fluid and diff oil, and do a thorough test drive including the figure 8 test if its a 249 equipped rig.

Anything you buy that has 180k and you're looking to put another 80 a day on will cost you money somewhere. Then there's the fuel mileage....

Haha. He's going from a full size 4-door Ram 1500 so I'm sure he'll be gaining a few MPG. Thanks for the input.

Just being realistic here, but I wouldn't expect much more mpg from a Zj than a full size pickup.

Im lucky to get 12mpg in my ZJ. it probably doesn't help that I drive it like I stole it though

I'm gettin 17mpg highway and 13mpg city. I6 4" lift on 31s.
