There are plenty of 4.0 TSi's out there. The 5.2 with the tow package is the only other option my ZJ had. And just because that ZJ doesn't say 4x4 on the back doesn't mean it isn't. I'm not saying a 98 TSi can't be a two wheel drive; I don't have irrefutable evidence for 98s like I have for 97s. I would doubt they'd offer a higher trim level ZJ without 4x4 unless it was a V8 ZJ ordered for towing. 2wd ZJs equipped with 5.2s were "capable" of 6700 lbs, 200 more than a 4wd 5.2 when properly equipped. I guess that one could have been ordered as such, but it wouldn't have that 4.0 exhaust tone of which you speak.

The TSi wasn't even really much of a higher-level ZJ. It was priced between Laredo and Limited. The Limited is commonly found in southern states with 2WD and a V8, and didn't have standard 4WD any year it was produced. Actually the whole reason the 2WD ZJ was sold at all was because the demand for 4WD vehicles is low in states like Texas and California, which each make up huge segments of buyers, which can only be expanded by offering cheaper 2WD variants. To my knowledge, only the Orvis and 5.9 Limited editions never offered 2WD versions.

In Indiana I can understand 2WD models being rare when marginally-more-expensive AWD models are offered, but I'd be willing to bet 2WD versions of the TSi were sold mainly to the Gulf States Daimler-Chrysler dealer group. I've never personally seen inside of a 2WD TSi (never gone looking for a 2WD ZJ) but I have seen one at the UT Arlington parking lot in Deep Amethyst. No 4x4 badges and to be sure: no front differential bump. I don't have pictures as proof, but I did see such a Jeep. It was also a 4.0 model.

Like I said, they came standard with the on-demand Quadra-Trac. I guess, at that time, anything was possible ordering vehicles. Someone got something other than the standard equipment, for whatever reason.

Well, 5.2 ZJs came standard with 4WD, but could be downgraded to 2WD after 1996. Orvises came standard with V8s and Quadra-trac and could be downgraded to 4.0 with QT or even with ST. These are definitely options you don't get today.

I've seen a couple TSis down in SoCal for sale and I'm pretty sure they were two wheel drive.

A lot of ZJ and XJs are 2 wheel drive around here.. It kinda sucks lol

The more available options and packages a vehicle has the more confusing that vehicle's history becomes.

I didn't realize my asking this question would open a can of worms such as this...for what it's worth, I appreciate everyone's input, even though I think I am more confused now then before, lol.

On topic,
YKYDAZJW you ask a seemingly simple question about your ZJ and it turns out to be more complicated then answering the meaning of life.

Ha. I spent the last 2days skimming over this thread going......"tsi.......tsi.....tsi.....tsi...."!

I figured you could jus order what you wanted from the stealership, that always makes things confusing. I do like the the silver tsi's with the purple trim, not the wheels they came with though!

96 ZJ sittin up 6" on 35's with 4:56's and a 12k winch. Cuz...why the hell not!?

If you think we've overspoken TSis, we could probably talk about Orvises or the varied Laredos. Or ZGs, that'd be a fun discussion. Lots of misconceptions about ZGs that a few European friends and the ZG FSM have cleared up.

Controversial fact: Some ZGs between 1996 and 98 were equipped with the 5.9l engine.

Hey that sounds interesting, what exactly is a zg anyways? I'd heard it was the euro zj, but then someone said they were in europe and its still called a zj there??
