Vehicles didn't care about that till around 2007 I think. Most new vehicles yell at you all day until that seatbelt is buckled...
It also helps that, for safety regs, Grand Cherokees are considered trucks, and so they only have to flash the light a couple times, beep a couple times, and carry on. Later on, newer regs would apply to cars and trucks all the same, and make trick registration of SUVs as trucks a thing of the past. (Except for CAFE fuel consumption stuff)
