He means, as a teenager, you're into the wrong things for your car. Smoked lights are dumb.

I'm not a teenager. I think smoked lights are pretty cool. Now, would I do it? Yes. I smoked my front turn signals. Would I do the tails? Eh. It looks cool, but I'd rather not get rear ended. You also want others to be able to see you when you're on a trail. They're cool but I wouldn't do the tails.

Ill have to grab a pic tomorrow night for you with them lit up. With led bulbs they shine pretty damn bright still I think.

Way I see it, your lights are there to provide highly visible signals to others, or to improve your own visibility. Why would you impair that? This is your safety and that of everyone around you. I've been behind people with blacked out taillamps and not been able to see their brake lights, let alone their running lights. It's unsafe. I feel the same about improperly-installed HID headlamps. While a proper projector assembly setup is fine and improves driver visibility without affecting others (whoo safety!) most people just toss them into facory reflector housings with light diffusers and all that does is blind people, which is super unsafe as well. The best protection against a crash is to not get into one and that's what your various lights are for: Warning against the potential for a crash.

Now, I do think it looks stupid, but I don't judge people for what they prefer cosmetically. I judge them on how poorly they prioritize their own safety as well as mine. Every time I see a set of smoked taillamps, all I can assume is the car is invisible at night or when braking, since for every guy who does a safe job of coloring the housing, there are 26 idiots who don't.

As for my personal opinion on car cosmetics: have some class and be reserved and subtle. People will like that more than a gaudy job with chrome 26" rims and ****ty HIDs. But I don't hold people to cosmetics, just safety.

I added a spoiler to my ZJ , and a fat Monster sticker

"aut viam inveniam aut faciam"

I hate when old people poke me at weddings, point and whisper, "You're next." So I've started doing the same thing to them at funerals

HIDs in improper housings are illegal as well. The DOT says they need to be in certain types of housings. I think they're like class 2 and class 3 if they're not projectors. Don't hold me to that though. It's been years since I thought about buying them. Reflective housings, like on our ZJs are not made for HIDs and HIDs are not made for them. Now, some of the euro stuff on eBay might be classed properly for HIDs, assuming the stuff is DOT certified.
