You get a ton of low end torque. V8 makes more torque at higher rpm. I6 is not indestructible, just dropped mine in the scrap iron tub because it had a hole in the block from a rod bolt coming out, they can and do destruct. I have a lot of arguments for v8s but I'll leave it with both the 4.0 and 318 have there place, and are both great engines.

4 liter, cast-iron engine... Beef up compression, do a bit of custom work here and there, instant diesel. Problem?

depends on the maker my BMW is an I 6 and she loves running about 3 grand now the gas gauge can be used as a fan at that point but its the best of both worlds the torque and power are all there. now at the same time i can go from a stop and just let the clutch out and it won't stall it will just chug along at next to no rpms

I'd kill for a manual trans I know people have done the swap, just have no means or money for such a thing. I believe they made 93's with a manual trans from the factory

Back on topic, when you have a moment to stop and remember that at one point, your ZJ was brand new and everything worked properly.

and when after reading all of these posts, you are thankful that your headliner is miraculously still in one piece.

3000 is where the cam comes on in many v8s. Gearing has more to do with letting the clutch out at idle, driven many v8s that way as well. Take a 4.0 xj with 3.23 gears and 35s it won't do that, lol. There is a reason sports cars do not run i6s, just like there is a reason the diesel truck world has switched to i6s instead of the 70s and 80s when they all had screaming v8 diesels that sounded amazing but fell on their face with heavy loads. The Duramax I would say is the best of both worlds, but even it spins 3500 on the top, but makes so much torque it still makes huge power at those speeds.
