Is this a direct swap? will all the steering components mount up and will the CA brackets line up, I'm upgrading to full adjustables. is it the same width?

almost direct. driveshafts will be different lengths and mounting for the sway bar endlinks may be a little different.

Grab the driveshaft off the XJ as well and you should be good.

Sounds good. I'm asking cause I chewed up my ring and pinion in my d30 on my ZJ and it sat for over a month cause I'm joblesss and couldn't afford to fix it so I decided to throw the hubs rotors and calipers on with no axles or diff. in-erds and well to say the least I learned when you fix something fix it right. I went down the road about 50 feet and the hub snapped and my tire is hanging on by the brake line and it looks like I bent the knuckle, and since I'll be speding a whole lota money I'm gonna just swap in an hp30 and throw a ox locker in while I'm at it.

the unit bearing needs the axle outer shaft at a minumum to stay together. If you had put the outers back in it would have been fine.

the outers? what do you mean if I threw the shafts in there I might've gotten away with it?

You may also have problems with caster adjustment. The LP D30 has the adjustment on the axle, the HP D30 has it on the "frame." If you put in the HP D30, you have no OEM adjustment.
There are a few solutions. Adjustable LCAs of course, or get the caster adjustment buckets and shims off the frame of the donor XJ, and then elongate the holes on your ZJ LCA mount to get adjustment. You can see the factory almost went this route, as they put in the holes to mount the adjuster buckets!
If you have any lift, you may not even need a new drive shaft.

Lucky bastards with your 3.55 gears. There's about 10 XJs sitting in my junkyard, and front axles are $95, but you know how rare a newer XJ with ABS and 3.73's is?

Is there info on the HP30 regarding the gears or do you have to count rotations?

most or the time on the edge of the ring gear you can find two numbers telling you the tooth count
ie. 41 10 = 4.10 ratio

If you find an early XJ like the 84-86 with a 2.8 V6 Auto, it may have 3.73s. I have 2 3.55 HP's sittin in my yard, just gotta throw one in.
