Write up on Oil Changing 4.0L WJ

I've been googling for the past 30 min. and can't find any WITH PICTURES...I need pictures lol. I don't feel like pumping out another $54 for somethin' that takes an hour.

It's real simple. I'm actually going to change mine in a few hours.

1)Check your manual for oil type. I have the I6 and use 10w30 and yours is probably the same but check.
2)Run to the local auto parts store and get 6qts of oil and a filter
3)If it's your first time changing grab an oil pan and a wrench filter
4)Warm your engine up to normal operating temperature (~200)
5)Get a wrench and undo the oil drain bolt on the oil pan (I forget the size of the bolt)
6)Let all of the oil drain into the pan
7)After all the oil is out remove the oil filter
8)Replace oil pan bolt
9)Take some new oil and rub it all over the rubber seal to the new oil filter (Prevents leaks)
10)Fill the new oil filter partially with oil (Relieves stress on first start up)
11)Put the new filter on
12)Remove the oil cap and fill with 6qts
12)Check dipstick
13)Make sure everything is tight (Filter, Oil Pan Bolt, Oil Cap)
14)Crank engine
15)Observe bay engine and ground for any leaks
16)Check dipstick again (Will be a little less than the first check because the oil will have circulated)
17)Check oil pressure gauge.

I think that's about it. Pretty simple. It'll take longer the first time but you will be better/faster at it as time goes on. Good Luck!

EDIT: Turn engine off after warming it up.

What do you need pictures for? Changing the oil on the 4.0L WJ is the same as changing it on any other vehicle. As always, you should make sure and locate your 710 cap before draining your old oil.

Make sure the the gasket comes off with the old oil filter !!!

Also make sure to wipe that area down before seating the new filter.

take the oil cap off after initially removing the drain bolt....helps it drain faster

If you need pictures to change your oil, you probably shouldn't be working on your jeep anyway. Have someone to help you.

Whatever you do, don't take it to a jiffy lube. I can't tell you how many vehicles we have come in at work that have stripped drain plugs and the sticker on their window says "jiffy lube". We had a 08' mkx, I believe, that had it's last change done at jiffy lube. All the threads in the oil pan are completely gone/stripped out. We has to push it out back (can't add oil without a plug lol) where it sits untill monday to get a new oil pan installed.

I had the last oil change done at Wal-Mart and don't trust them cause of some of the "retards" I see working back there(no offense if you work at a wal-mart)...I can't say much for myself cause I need pictures to change oil. I've just never done it before in my life and would like to be able to do all the routine stuff on my jeep myself.

Here you go

That guy removed the filter first, then drained the oil...I've always done it the opposite. Drain oil then remove filter. Did you find the 710 cap yet?

Removing that pesky 710 cap does not help it drain any faster, it's just your imagination.

There's a breather that's linked to the air intake.
