won't stay started

I have a 98 cherokee that won't stay on after i start it. It also has a an issue where all the gauges jump all over the place and the all the lights inside turn off and on. I thought it was the alt but now it won't start and stay on. any ideas or know where to start to get it fixed.

Check the wiring to the o2 sensor for a short. Sounds like your PCM is on the fritz. The most common culprit is the o2 wiring. Does your fuel pump stay on when you turn the key?

everything was fine until the other night on the way home all of this started to happen and i thought it had something to do with my alt so i changed it and it started but i didn't drive it for the rest of the weekend until this morning and it wouldn't stay on. so i'm going to say that no i haven't gotten water on or in anything. battery checked out great, put new terminal ends and cleaned the ground wire that leads to the chaise from the battery. I did notice that there was a lot of corrosion leading down the inside of the ground wire but didn't think that would be a problem. i'm really hoping that it's not my computer.

i'd get that other wire replaced as well.
after you've disconnected the battery the computer needs time to relearn the idle strategy and how to drive. for some rigs, that usually need a tune up pretty bad, that can include you needing to feather the gas to keep it idling or to start it. should relearn in a few trip cycles.
though i'd look into tune up items and clean up the throttle body and idle control solenoid.

my husband just did a complete tune up about a month or so ago and also sea foam cleaned the engine and throttle body. i'll have him change the wire and see what happens. How much do computers cost for a Cherokee with a 5.9l?

Wiggle the computer connections to see if there is any change in it starting. Try wiggling while someone else is starting it if it won't start.

We did find a couple of wires that led to the injectors that were melted or the covering started to fall off. We spliced in New wire with no change...

I'm referring to the C1, C2, and C3. The main connections on the front of the PCM. The PCM is located behind the coolant overflow bottle. Wiggle those connections during startup to see if it affects it.
