Won't get into last gear

95 ZJ 5.2, tranny issue I guess.

I have a rebuilt tranny with a year warranty, it's been over a year.

Problem is I'll accelerate, everything's fine, will change gears at about 30-35 mph, but then won't switch again. Even when I get up to 60 mph, the RPMs just get up between 2 and 3,000.

Questions
A) Is this an automatic 'take it to the tranny shop' situation, or can I do something to fix it?

B) I live 2 hours from the nearest city, will driving it there mess it up more? Should I drive slower than normal to keep RPMs under 3000?

I've done a lot of work on it, but tranny's are over my head. Any help or advice would be welcome.

Is this something that just happened and now it wont shift at all or has it been a on going problem/intermittant type concern? When you are driving and it should be in 4th, if you let off the gas does it have engine braking or does it just coast down freely? If there is no engine braking then you probably have problems with the o/d clutch. Does the T/C lockup in 3rd gear if you press the o/d button to cancel o/d?

Most of the time the electronic side of 4th gear fail it will set a DTC, you might check for codes.

DTC?

I can't really tell about the braking. It's only happened recently, and I've only driven it a mile or two at a time.

If it's an overdrive thing, is it safe to drive 100+ miles to an autoshop?

Do you have cruise control functionality?
Check engine light on? If so, what's the code? (key on,off,on,off,on within five seconds, watch the od off button flashes for Trans codes and the cel.for engine codes.)

Actually tested it this morning before leaving...

whether the overdrive was on or off, there was no difference. Is this good or bad?

What's the next step? Again, no check engine light.

can anyone help?

If not, is it able to be driven 2 hours to the nearest shop? Should I drive slowly?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

will do, thanks.

How does a brake lamp switch prevent it from going into 5th? I'd like to learn as I go.

Also, is it wise to drive it slower (40-50 mph) to town, or does it not matter? Will going 70-80mph do further damage?

I don't know much about transmissions, but my wild guess would be the overdrive solenoid. Just sounds like it wont go into 4th gear (you're transmission has 3 normal gears, 4th gear is overdrive.)
