If yours are busted which happens often, you can get the factory 2.5 speakers on ebay and get some bassblockers from crutchfield to install on the positive wire for each speaker so the dont blow again. ( You can do this on your own )
The speakers will run ~$50ea and $10ea for the bassblockers.

If you want to put in some 3.5 in or any other speaker you are going to have to cut the dash and prepare a custom housing for the speaker. ( You will probably end up paying someone to fab this job for you )

You can fit several different 3.5 inchers in there. Blaupunkt and Infinity are a couple off the top of my head. Just look for a shallow model. The replacements are pretty low quality and cost more than some 3.5's so I would get the 3.5s.

Do a search over on JU, there are tons of threads on this topic.

fabrication isn't a problem for me...the speakers aren't gone but they are on their way out the door...i have also heard of people fixing them with silicone or something. any opinions on that?

I just went through this with both of my WJ's.

I replaced one speaker on each of the WJ's with the cheep 2.5" from the on line site. Worked great.

When I was forced to replace the second front speaker on each they only workded for a few hours. I went to the $tealership and purchased two (one for each WJ) and installed in each jeep.

Works great again. It turns out that the cheep speakers are just too high resistance. the factory 2.5 ohm's brought the total resistance back down in line.

So, $5 for the cheep on line speaker and 60 for the factory speaker. I spent 65 dollars on each WJ for new front tweeters. Problem solved.

I would just get a set of 3.5s off ebay. Fitment is not a big issue at all and can be taken care of with a hot pocket knife.

The mounting in your jeep wont match the speaker housing and you will have to add to the housing to make them compatible with these new speakers. (Not that big of a deal)

It will take less time to install if you order the factory speakers.

Whichever speaker you choose get bass-blockers to install in the speaker wire to prevent the new speakers from blowing out like your old ones.

those 2.5" are the one's that I bought.

Read my post just above.....

One will work, two will not. Not sure about the 3". The ohm's are lower but I suspect you'll fabricate something for the install and find they two will not work for long.

I just replaced my blown ones with a pair of Infinity Reference 1021t
1" textile dome tweeters. They come with an in-line crossover as well.

I used the mounting plates available on ebay, slightly modified them to fit and voila! Killer sound again and known good brand. However you could make your own from plexi-glass by using the old speakers as templates and then cut to size.

I ordered them from Crutchfield Canada and had them in a few days, good service!
