wj transfer case blown

Hello,

I just got my 4.7 quadradrive Grand cherokee Limited a few weeks ago. It has a NV247 transfer case. This truck has never been off road and very well taken care of. I noticed a whine or hum at around 50mph coming from the driveline but according to other posts, it is nothing major. I wanted to see what this Jeep can do off road so i went down the lawn where some of the other trucks are kept and it was squishy.

I thought it was getting too wet so I put it in reverse. The rear end started walking to the side! WTF, where is my 4wd? I tried it in 4 lo and everything, stuck with rear tires spinning in the mud.

Had to call my brother to pull me out. As I am in reverse, the transfer case is squeeling, smelling, and jerking then....nothing, just the rear tires trying to pull me up the hill. NOW, I have no Whine or noise at 50mph but no front wheels driving.

To test this, I jacked up the rear and put it in drive. The TC was clicking but would not pull the truck off the jack!
Is this just a great opportunity to do a 242 swap?

By the way, I just 3 days prior, I changed the TC fluid with the $12.50 per quart dealer only Mopar fluid. When I went to check the fluid to see I had fluid, the tc let out air and dribbled real dark fluid which was clear 3 days ago.

Anyone have a 242 near CT for sale?

It sounds like the OP probably never serviced the transfer case. It likely couldn't handle being truly taxed when you tried it, and that's that. The 247 will revert to 2wd all the time when it's worn out, but you should be able to shift into 4-low as it's a direct link like the 242. It bypasses the LSD function. So I've no idea what's up there. I'd say it is time for a 242. Isn't it always?

Thanks for the replys. I have read the posts on how to do the swap and it looks straight forward. Glad I caught this problem before the snow came. I just need to get the new one(which I do not have yet) in. Should I just get another 247 for now and then do a 242 swap when it is warmer out?

Putting a replacement 247 is the same amount of work as putting in a 242. The only exception is the rear driveshaft needs to be changed if you get a 242HD

I found the 242 to be far cheaper than a 247 (for the case).

When it's all said and done, the price is about the same.

Ok, What else do I need besides(and correct me if I am wrong), the 242, rear drive shaft, wiring harness from the 242, and bezel for selectrac interior.?

Thank you all again.

I don't think there's any wiring involved with yours. I believe you'll only need a 242HD case and everything should bolt right in.

On mine I didn't bother with the bezel and I know for a fact that there was no wiring involved. I purchased a standard 242 case with an external slip yoke and the matching drive shaft. I swapped the end of the new-to-me shaft (slip-yoke) onto my old shaft, had it shortened 1" to fit and slapped it in.

I believe that if you just get a 242HD TC, the rear drive shaft should be a direct swap. Perhaps someone else can chime in here?

You need the 242HD shaft. It is a 32 spline while the 247 and 242 are 27

I cant wait to put this swap in motion. I will let everyone know how it goes and do a writeup on the process. THANK YOU all for making this easier.

Question, I planned a trip from CT to TN towing a trailer one way(3000lbs), am I ok to do this with the jeeps current TC cooked or should I hold off until I get the TC? ? does driving it now hurt anything?

That's what happened when I "pushed it"....

Not saying it'll happen to you but why risk it?

(I believe the chain broke, knocked a hole through the bottom the case when it slapped around then got bound up and tore it in half)

How can i tell if the transfer case is a HD case? I am looking at a few 242's and do not want to pick the wrong one.
