WJ Key & Key fob
Read some info about the newer WJ's having some kind of chip in the key needed to start. Is this true?
I now have WJ, seller only provided me with one key and one fob. I want to have least two fobs and a spare (just in case).

from what i understand, there is a computer chip in the key, the only pl;ace to get this key is from the stealership.
also, try not to get you key submerged in water. BTW, what are the specs of your jeep?

I was the one in a rush to "upgrade" my ZJ.
So I bit the bullet and did it! I'm waiting to hear back from Jeep on with the build sheet info. All I know is that it's a Laredo, V8, QuadraTrac, and one key and one fob. Dang. Stealership key is going to suck.

its the sentry key system. it has a chip in the key that the car reads upon start up. you can buy the keys and fobs on ebay for cheap you just have to go to the stealership to get them programed.
check this out for deeper explanation: http://www.wjjeeps.com/sentry.htm |

search ebay for jeep sentry key. i bought one there (startec i think) for 15 dollars as opposed to 45 at the stealership.

You need 2 keys to program the keys yourself. $tealership can program them with just one.

yes... you can program the key if you have two but if you dont you have to take it to the dealership unless you have an extra DRBII scan tool around which goes for a few grand.
now for the fobs you have to take those to the dealer to program them. some dealers might do it for free and some will charge you but it shouldnt be much. |

Now my head is going to spin...
So ... I can buy two more keys and have the stealership code one and I can do the third myself, however, any additional fobs would need to be programmed by the stealership, right? Is there a limit as to how many fobs can actually be programmed to a single vehicle?

ok
fobs= no matter how many you have you HAVE to take it to the dealer to get them programmed (you can program up to four) keys= if you have 2 you can program each one after that by yourself (you can program a total of eight) |

i recently got a new key, fob and progamming for my 99. 8 bucks for the key, 45 for the remote and 30 to program. my key is the black headed one so it doesn't have the chip in the key.

also, you could always get the module for the chipped key vehicles for a remote starter system, you install your chipped key into this module and then you can use standard cut keys to start your car because the computer reads the chip from the key that is installed in the hidden module... but i think this would cost you about just as much as getting a 2nd key cut and programmed.
