WJ Front Axle Shaft Compatibility?

After swapping t-cases and still having no 4x4 (yet the front driveshaft turned), I pulled the front diff cover and after some head scratching I spotted the problem.

Can you spot it too?

You're right! It's missing an axle shaft! However, both CVs look the same and feel the same when squishing them. This still leads me to believe that the inner was deliberately removed.

My question is:

Will any other Dana 30 axles fit?

I have a TJ with a D30 front (u-joint style, not CV) sitting in my garage for the winter so I could borrow that one if need be. Another option is I have a parts WJ with Quadra-Drive axles that I could pull a shaft from, but lately it's been below -20C here and that Jeep is outside so I don't want to frig with salted (seized more than most of you southerners could ever imagine) bolts and hubs that would need to be pounded off.

Thanks for reading!

Chris.

Do you have quadratrac or quadradrive axles? They are not interchangeable from what I have been told. The D30 axles on the 99-04 Grands (WJ) are also not c clip axles and most of teh other Dana 30 axles are. They are very cheap to replace, probably can get new for under $100 at a parts store.

www.rock-auto.com have the shafts for ~$50...and as mentioned the quadra-drive axle shafts are different length then non quadra-drive.

None of the other heeps axle shafts are interchangeable, can only use WJ ones.

Ok, great! The knowledge on this site rocks.

Yes, my driving Jeep is QuadraTrac and the parts Jeep is QuadraDrive. Was planning on doing a complete axle swap in the spring so was hoping to avoid investing too much into this axle, but if I can get a shaft for $100 or so, that's peanuts compared to the benefits of having 4x4 in the snow.

Thanks for the help.

To be honest with you, it's easier to swap your axle over than to change the shaft...its really really easy to swap the front axles on the WJ...when I pulled mine it took about 30 minutes :P

Changing the shaft can be a bear because the hub assembly sticks hardcore.

I'm guessing the easiest way is to leave the tires on it, unbolt everything, then roll it out. Weather permitting, I'm going to consider that. To do the swap itself I have a heated garage, but the parts Jeep is at my folks' place in a portable garage on sand so it's kinda chilly right now. Will have to wait for a warm Saturday.

None of the D30's are c-clipped.

The WJ D30 inners are unique to the WJ only. The outers are interchangable. $100 at Napa and be on your way

So last night I bought a new front-left shaft assembly out of 2002 WJ from the wreckers. I pulled the existing shaft out of my Dub and found it was about an inch shorter than the one I just bought. This made perfect sense as to why it appeared missing when looking behind the diff cover. However, I'm still incredibly puzzled as to why it was in there in the first place.

After getting it all back together with the new shaft I test drove it. 4x4 does work now, but when hitting the gas moderately (actually, anything more than lightly), there's a loud snapping sound as if the splines are slipping. I pray it's coming from the diff and not the t-case.

Anyway, I didn't think to compare the spline count between the two shafts and it's difficult to see in the photo. Would they be different? If so, would it be possible for the shaft to fit in the carrier and handle just small loads before slipping if the count was different? Or should it just not fit at all?

Getting 4x4 on this Jeep will be the death of me!

Thanks

Chris

I would bet someone that did not have a clue put a quadradrive shaft in it at some point and never realized it was too short.

splines are the same, the snapping noise could easily be the spider gears. they don't look too hot in that picture.

The spiders seemed good in person. No side-to-side play and the edges are all sharp. In fact, all gears in the pumpkin looked great.

And I thought the Quadra-Drive shafts were longer?
