WJ 4.7 belt squeal?

Trying to track down the latest squeal on my '02 WJ 4.7 (80K miles). Its basically a typical belt squeal that kind of resembles a tea kettle sound, only not as loud. Now it doesn't make the sound all the time, kind of sporadic but I have narrowed it down to this: from a dead stop under acceleration it will trigger the squeal and last for several seconds after you reach your cruising speed. As soon as you apply brakes or come to a stop, the sound completly fades away to nothing. Also on initial start up of the vehicle or idle, it does not make the sound. Any ideas, idler pulley, serpentine belt??

It's a leak in the turbo lines.

Seriously though, what shape is the belt in? Check the tensioner and pully for play.

80K miles on the stock belt? If so yea it's way past time. I change my belt along with tranny fluid and t-case fluid every 25-30K miles. Diff fluid twice a year. Most people over look all those things.

I doubt if its the original belt, but you never know? I purchased the vehicle with roughly 48K, so its a possibility bc I have never replaced it to date. Now I am no expert on serpentine belts, but there are no obvious cracks or gouges. When you say check for play in the tensioner, exactly how does one do that? Or should I say how much play, if any, should it have?? In the meantime, I'm gonna go ahead and replace the belt, its cheap enough and hopefully kills the noise.

Here is a dumb follow up question. To remove the belt I know you take your 15MM and rotate the tensioner clock-wise and the belt pops off. But in terms of tightening it, how is that done? Or does the automatic tensioner do what it says an automtically adjust to the belt? I am not used to the automatic tensioner, Im used to the manual adjustment like on my '93 YJ.

You dont tighten it. Put it back on the same way you took it off you have an automatic belt tensioner. As long as the tensioner is not super easy to move and locks toghtly against the belt your good. While the belt is off turn the water pump, alt, power steering pump, ac compressor and anything else you see. Make sure they all move nice and smooth.
