A winch mount, ONLY for a winch.....

Ok, so I've been doing a lot of research on this. I have a Warn winch I got from my fire company for $75 (couldnt pass it up) and now I need a way to attach it to the bumper. I made something out of cardboard for it. Tell me what you guys think about this. I realize Detourusa makes the backbone system and IOR makes the Go Berserk mount, but im tryin to save some money since I'm a poor college student.

The cardboard thats sticking out against the bumper would actually go inside and attach. They are the brackets, but i bent them out so i could see the whole thing against the bumper.

So tell me...

Should work. But you need to beef up the mounting. The strength of the mount is the most important part of the wich carrier/bumper.

Xerxes 04-18-2010 11:13 AM

yea, i was going to use 1/4" for all of it. You think thats strong enough to bolt into the unibody?

StrokedWJ 04-18-2010 11:16 AM

Whats that shackle hanging from? I'm guessing its hanging from a front hitch. If so, why not just make a portable winch mount similar to this: http://www.worktruck-outfitters.com/...ulti_mount.jpg

Xerxes 04-18-2010 11:21 AM

haha :p actually its just there for looks until I get something legit :teehee:

that was my original idea though. The winch came with a hitch-mounting plate, but I decided to go this route and sell that plate (which i didnt sell yet btw)

I can tell you now that cardboard is a very poor material for a bumper. It will fold like cardboard upon impact. Also, it's an even worse material for winches. Not only will the bolts tear out with the first pull, but - believe it or not - cardboard isn't even strong enough to support the weight of the winch. I know, I know... they use cardboard for packing the winch, but that doesn't mean that cardboard is strong enough to be used as the winch mount.
:D:D:D

OK, being serious now... if money is the main factor, seriously just go with a front receiver hitch and utilize the hitch mounting plate (don't sell it!). You'll be money ahead and can save up for what you really want later. The good is that you'll save money for now, it's portable (you can leave it at home when you don't need it, you don't always have that extra weight to carry around, and it's not in the elements 100% of the time), and it will go either front or rear (providing you've got a hitch in the back, too). The bad is that you have to lug it to the front or rear each time, it will likely seriously affect your approach angle, it may be weaker in side pulls, and it's not as theft-resistant as it would be if permanently mounted (although you can get around that within reason). Lots of other things on both sides, to be sure, and I'm sure you've already thought of all this. Another thing in favor of going with the front receiver: You can get it done today. Then work on building the other winch mount if that's the way you want to go. Also, you can actually HAVE a legit shackle in the front now! :)

haha TMCXJ you definitely have good points. Since you posted your reply I did research on hitch receivers AND talked to a welder. on amazon a front hitch receiver is $210ish, while the guy I talked to said for $150 he could easily get the job done. So now I dont know... You had really good points about using a hitch receiver, they just seem so expensive, plus the hitch mount I have for it would leave the winch about 1' out from the grille. I was looking to keep the winch right up against the grille.

Decisions decisions.... :dunno:

The material is NOT what I was refering to. I assumed 3/16 or 1/4". You want the mount bracketry to go as far back on the uni-frame as possible and it should wrap around at least 2 sides of the frame. Should mount to the frame with a minimum of 8 bolts.

hitch mount are an easy way but they do hangdown and stick out a bunch. Your idea will give more clearance and look better.

You could get a front hitch and a winch mount for it. If you have hitch on the back, run cables to both ends with quick-disconnect plugs, and you can use the winch at either end of the Jeep as needed.

oh ok. well it can go back a little ways but not too much. here is where they get bolted in:

I currently have the front hitch winch mount, but no front hitch receiver. Cheapest I found is around $200 which is currently too much for me.

There's a hitch listed here for $150: Front Mount Receiver Hitch

hmm very interesting. good find. the problem is with shipping its still $176.16, and im worried about how low and far out the winch would stick from the bumper/grille...

Im going to keep talking to some welders and see what they say :tea:

comptiger5000 04-19-2010 04:33 AM

The winch sticking out may be an issue, but you can always keep it in the Jeep until needed, then put it on the hitch.

jtsjeep99 04-19-2010 09:56 AM

Thats the setup I have and it works great. I set up a portable system with a Warn front receiver and quick connect plugs through the grill and made up a set of cables that will reach to the rear with quick connects to go from the grill mounted plug to the rear when the winch is used at the back receiver. It works fantastic and I am glad I went that route because I have used it from the back as much as the front. Plus your winch isn't out for someone to steal or get weathered. I even made a pigtail with jumper cable ends to plug into the long cable so it can double as a jumper cable.

Xerxes 04-19-2010 10:02 AM

Yea I forgot to mention I have the quick-disconnect plugs. I just would need a hitch receiver. Anyone know where to get a cheap used one?

btw I think Im going to be talking with another welder today about my original plan. Part of liking the bumper mount is when i get more money I can keep welding metal on to it, eventually making it a full bumper. I'll update you guys as more calls are made and more cash comes in! :2thumbsup:
