Where is the mileage stored?

Does anybody know in which component the mileage of a WJ is stored?

If I swap the instrument cluster, will it then show the mileage of the donor car or of my car?

What component do I have to swap if I want to change the mileage value shown on the display on the odometer (don't worry, I do not want to cheat an unaware buyer)?

Ever see ferris bueler's day off ?

I think it should show your cars, if thats the one thats getting the new cluster, I dont think the counter comes out? But the computer will also have the mileage stored there, that is where the dealer checks the mileage.

The mileage is stored in the cluster, PCM and BCM I believe. You may have problems if you put in a PCM in that doesn't match the cluster or BCM's stored mileage but I don't believe you'll have trouble the other way around (though the cluster may display the PCM's mileage instead of it's own?).

edit: I read your disclaimer but keep in mind that while you may have reasons for changing the displayed mileage now, if you were to sell the car years from now and forget to tell the buyer about the mileage change, you could get in serious trouble.

Mileage is with the cluster.

Swapping in a different cluster will cause the odometer to read what is on the cluster, not the actual mileage on the Jeep.

@241comp: I understand your concerns, but don't worry, I will not sell the car with an altered mileage.

For some customs reasons I need somebody to determine the value of the car. More miles -> less value -> lower payments (not the other way round as it it sometimes done). I need more miles for a few mins only.....

I don't think its stored in the cluster. another thread went off-topic and it was discussed when I was going to trade an 02-04 with 02grands 00.

The cluster should be dependent upon both the ecu and another set of fail safes. otherwise it would be to easy to commite odometer fraud

The IC does store a mileage number (and most likely the PCM and BCM do as well). The WJ FSM says that with the "proper inputs" that number can be increased but not decreased. If you replace the instrument cluster because of some failure, try to get one with fewer miles than yours so it can be adjusted to read the true mileage.

I can guarantee mileage follows the cluster.

I temporarily swapped my 02 cluster with my friends 99 and both displayed the cluster mileage.

And odometer fraud is only fraud once you sell the vehicle and claim the mileage is actual. There are countless other ways to reduce mileage on a vehicle that are just as easy, if not easier than swapping out the cluster.

Apparently you have not lived in VA. every year when you go for inspection they record the mileage, if you have not claimed something through paperwork with the DMV it sends up some sort of red flag, best case is you get a letter in the mail that you must bring the car to DMV and explain, they CAN actually hold your car at the inspection station and have a state trooper impound it if you don't have a reason.

That's good to know. I know that having a PCM and BCM with different mileages will cause problems but apparently as long as they (computers) match, it doesn't matter what the cluster says.

Just be careful - if it is for import duty or something like that, it could be considered tax fraud (I may be wrong - it may be perfectly legal). Of course, IANAL.

I thnik that would greatly depend on the country. for about 8 months I have been trying to import a 98 Eunos 800SP, no such question about the mileage has been asked
