It’s on the tranny bell housing, driver’s side. PITA to get to. It helps to have a midget in the family.

Greg, thanks for the post, will work on replacing that this weekend. however, would that make my Jeep not start? I'm not getting a spark at the coil, on the distributer. any ideas?

no spark at the coil means no spark a the distributor. No spark to the coil means its not getting the go ahead from the CPS in most cases

Could the motor temporarily cutting out at near highway speeds (then recovering) and hesitating occasionally be a possible symptom of a bad CPS? I've already changed plugs/wires/cap/rotor, IAS, coil, and TPS, and now it doesn't seem to stall out like it had been doing occasionally, but it still idles kind of low and rough and hesitates occasionally. If I install the CPS and that doesn't help, where would you go next? The PCM? O2 sensors?

It's hard to tell. Yes it's possible but not probable. I think you have a fuel delivery issue.

Thanks. OK, I did put in a new fuel filter and I thought the fuel pump was an "either it works or doesn't work" proposition. What's left, other than injectors themselves? I guess I should check for fuel pressure (it's a 95 GC Laredo 4x4)?

My fuel pump on my 93 ZJ stoped working after it warmed up (~15 minutes into driving it). Does it appear to not rev up past certain RPM's or is it speed based? Like greasefingers said, check fuel pressure first.

I haven't really pushed the RPMs, but it doesn't appear to cut out at a certain RPM, but when it hesitates or temporarily cuts out, it's typically around the same speed range (like 45-55) and when I'm not really on the accelerator at all or much. It's like it forgets it needs to keep running for a second because I'm not hitting the gas much. It does seem to happen after it's warmed up, though the idle is ALWAYS a little rough, despite the noticeable improvements that came from all the other stuff I've changed so far.

Keep an eye on ebay, I bought a brand new Mopar CPS for my Jeep a couple of weeks ago for $18 + $5 shipping.

OK, the stalling condition has apparently not gone away either. I have noticed it seems to happen only after the jeep is warmed up and I'm not sure, but it seems more frequent and harder to restart when I'm below a half a tank of gas. Could this lend creedence to the theory that it's the fuel pump and it gets squirrely when the jeep is hot, and the pump gets hotter when there's less gas in the tank where it lives cooling it?

The gas pump is cooled by fluid being pumped thru it. The pick-up tube is at the bottom of the gas tank, so even it the pump is not submerged; it will remain cool enough to operate correctly. The heat loss to the surroundings, the gas in the tank, is minimal compared to the gas flowing thru it. You have a difficult problem without knowing the fuel pressure.

When my fuel pump died it was a gradual process. It started with the Jeep needing a few extra seconds of cranking to start. Then it need multiple cranks. Then we graduated to hesitation stage and loss of power. Next was the stalling stage, which was really fun on the way to work . I chose to have my pump replaced by a mechanic as im not a fan of dropping the gas tank. It ran me $650. If your really handy tho you can do it yourself. Also ive seen some people run external pumps, but i dont have any info on that. There are several people here that did it, and there might even be a write up somewhere.
