djhart,
I'm guessing that you have the quadratrac. You may have a bad viscous coupler. If so, you'll need to replace it.

Does it feel like you're driving a part time 4wd system? Only happen after you've driven a while?
Might be the vicous coupler in the transfer case is failing and locking up. Makes it hard to turn, lots of tire scrubbing and maybe some hopping.

Well I had both replaced and here were my symptoms: the front differential howled like my cat in heat. This noise only occurred under a load…driving not coasting. It cost me just over $ 500 for the dealer to do. My 94GC has Quadratrac hence the NP249 transfer case. When I would turn sharp 90 ° at slow speeds, as one would while parking, the front wheels would turn at a much different rate than the rear wheels. This causes the jeep to shimmy, buck, and skip the front tires. The bucking was loud enough to be heard from the outside of the vehicle. I know this because people would stare at my GC as I would try to park it. The viscous coupling was shot. This over $ 1,000 for the dealer to install. By the way, I have only taken my jeep to the dealer three times because rate is $ 80/hr. Also I don’t to transmissions, TC’s,or Diff’s. Oh did I mention that it was $ 1,800 for them to replace the trans. Parts on my GC that I have physically replaced myself: fuel pump, radiator, brakes, shocks, water pump, tune-ups, & exhaust systems including my cat which rattled to the point that it drove me crazy. But I still love her

I jsut fixed this on mine... First the guy said my spider gears were bad... replaced them, $600.... Did the SAME thing afterwards, then replaced the clutches in the transfer case ($400.) I would try to get a quote on getting the transfer case clutches replaced. Now mine drives like a dream again. I jsut got it back last week.

Depending on the year of your jeep, if it is your transfer case- it might be cheaper to swap in a 242 or a 231 in place of the 249

I would just swap in a 242 ... Its a better case and you will have 2 wd after that...
Here is a link to my write up in case you decide to tackle it...

I don't know how bad your problem has gotten. But I read a post by a guy who fixed that problem by changing his fluids and strictly adgering to Daimler's recommendations on fluids. These easy fixes usually aren't enough...but somtimes they are.

If there is a cottman transmission place nearby, take it there and tell them that you think that your VC is going out. They will check it for FREE>
