When Do You Change Your Plugs?

I've heard both schools of thought and wanted to know what the majority of folks do.

Thanks for your input!

P.S. If you'd like, you can also post what brand of plugs and wires you use and when you change your wires as well.

I change mine irregularly but probably more often than they actually need it.

So do you wait for the engine to be running rough? What actually prompts you to change them?

Mine get changed every 100k. They may not need it, but I don't want it to get to where they do. I'm probably gonna do a tune-up here shortly with all new premium parts just to be safe.

I run Bosch platinums in everything I have, so every 100k. Except my diesel.

they recommend every 30K but that just so you don't have problems and have the jeep in the shop allot (get everything done at one time type of thinks with the 15K, 30K 45K) if its running good and the MPG is not to off there ok. unless you have the free time and want to do it for the fun of it

I run plugs in my cummins! freeze plugs...

i usually change mine when i feel like it, i will pull one out, check the gap, if its way off, i will regap it, throw it in, and run to the autoparts store. if its fine, i just put it back in. pretty sure i am due for some now that i think about it.

I will definitely do them if the engine starts running rough or stumbling at idle, but usually it's more, meh it's been a while, guess I'll change them. They're so cheap and easy to replace that it's about the last thing I ever want restricting the Jeep's performance.

I guess that's the real underlying question that I have. If you let your plugs go and go until the Jeep is running like crap and TELLS you they need to be changed, could you possibly be harming any part of your engine or causing more wear anywhere else than if you just keep your plugs in tip-top shape by changing them at some interval?

If your plugs wear out or get gummed up or whatever and your engine starts to run at less than optimum and that's where it ends, then I'd be inclined to only change them when they need it. If allowing the plugs to "go" before you change them can harm something or cause something else to wear out faster then I'd rather just keep on top of them and keep them changed. Make sense?

Oh, and how hard/time consuming is it to change the plugs on the 4.7L motor?

I don't know if you will harm the engine but i know it will preform less since the gaps are off or its dirty and will not get its full power for each spark.

I know what your talking about with changing them before they wear out, since i only put about 6K a year on the jeep and have had it for the past 3 years. but i still to maintain it and to some it looks like overkill to some sine its about to hit 40K. i will be changing my plugs in the spring with the coolant and the front breaks, since its still running ok and going a bit over the recommend time its not going to do anything major.

check out these videos its for early WK 4.7 but same as our WJ one
YouTube - How to Change Your Spark Plugs Part 1 - Jeep 4.7L
YouTube - How to Change Your Spark Plugs Part 2 - Jeep 4.7L

the hard/time depends on how fast you will work but after the first one you get a hang of it and it get simpler, but watch the video has good tips on getting the back 2 which are the hardest

Wait, it shows him pulling off the back wires, but not the plugs! That's what I want to see!
