I found this on a cherokee forum:

Tire Size

Largest tires you can fit on a stock Grand are 30X9.5

With a budget boost you can fit 31X10.5 (some minor trimming.)

You need 3.5 to clear 32's (additional trimming ..Minor that is..)

4.5 will clear 33's (this will require some serious trimming..)

I have a stock 97 zj aswell and I was told at with at least a couple inches lift will make it ok....I might be wrong I am sure I will be told lol.

31's with some minor trimming is the way to go

I think you would need to trim with 31's on a stock ZJ. I'm running 31's with a 2" bb without any trimming/rubbing.

They will rub at full steering lock.

That is true. I have them on my 93 ZJ and they do rub at full lock but other than that they are just fine.

I ran 31" M/T's on 2" BB. rub at full lock and minor rubbing on the front bumper. Now with 3.5" of lift there is no rub at full lock and they easily clear all the common rub points. We put 30X9.5r15 A/T's on my buddies XJ and there is no rub but he will never wheel it.
