Wheels binding - front and rear
First of all, I want to thank everyone on this board for all I know about my 98 5.9 limited (which isn't much). When making a 90 degree turn, I get some chirping from the rear and what seems to be a little binding in the front wheel. I have read all about the VC problems, which would explain the front, but my symptoms are not nearly as bad. I notice it more when the jeep is cold and I start my trip. On tight turns, the front end will wobble a bit, this may be normal for a 4x4, never had one. Sorry for the question, but I couldn't find an answer through searching - especially for the rear. I'm a finance guy and a mechanical idiot!

This may seem like a silly question, but I just found someone else doing what I am about to ask. Are you trying out your 4X4 mode on a dry surface? If so, that is probably the problem......

Sorry, that is WAY outta my league! Someone else just asked silmilar question further down the page.....They were talking about a VC. I think it connects the front and rear axles in the transfer case or something.......You can do a search also under other forums...they work well sometimes......Good luck ![]()

I haven't read about it causing rear wheel binding. I guess it does? Could you give me a quick lesson?

There is not necessarily anything wrong with your Jeep. When you cut the wheels hard over, your rear wheels are pushing against more resistance. Because of the increased resistance, your transfer case shifts some torque to the front axles, which causes them to pull the front end into the turn, this rather quickly unloads the driveline, so the transfer case shifts all the torque to the rear axles, causing the wheels to suddenly bind up against the increased load of the front wheels which are still turned. It's kind of like drawing an arc by using only straight lines... the rear of the Jeep is trying to push the vehicle in a straight line, and the front is being alternately pushed/pulled through the turn.
The simple solution is to avoid making 90 degree turns from a standing start, and make your turns a little wider by not turning your front wheels all the way over. HTH

It certainly would not hurt to check the ATF level in your transfer case.
