What is this under the transfer case shifter knob? (PIC)

Pulled off my t-case knob and found this little rod coming out of the lever. This rod has up/down and side to side play in it and I dont see it as serving any mechanical purpose. All I know is that it fits right in the center of the underside of the t-case shifter knob.

Pic.......

Does anyone know what its purpose is??

I ask because Im getting a threaded adapter custom made for 8 ball shifter knobs and the like .

I couldn't tell ya if it serves any mechanical purpose; since the t-case shifter has no detent system, I would say none?

But... When you buy or make your threaded adapter post it up, that's a pretty sweet idea.

You are supposed to push down to go from Neutral to 4-low.

Maybe on the 242, but on the 247, the mechanism shifts into N or 4 LO without the need to push down.

Maybe they use the same lever for all transfer cases but it doesn't serve a mechanical purpose in the 247.

Hmm, maybe thats the case , but thats for sure though, the lever does not need to be pushed down at all for the 247.

Boy was I wrong!

But I do have a 249 so it wouldn't apply to me anyhow.

I actually have a red button wired in that just sits on the end of the wire next to my seat, I always say its the ejector seat button because the reason its there(air horns) doesn't work right now.

Did that and it does nothing.

I think what cmar stated is correct, that its for the 242 and it may be that the factory used the same shift lever for all of the transfer cases available on the WJ. So for the 247, it serves no purpose being how the t-case lever does not need to be pushed down when shifting.

Mabey it's there for when you do your 247 to 242 swap, then it will need to be pushed down for 4Lo......
