What should I do with this ZJ?

This is my 4th Cherokee in a yr and a half. Just couldn't pass up the deal. A friend of the family was donating for $300 off his taxes. I came to look at it for some little parts and ended up buying the thing.

Its a 97, 5.2 motor, 157,000 miles. no dents but some rust on the bottom inside of every door and rusted out rockers.

Its got a blown motor. It started knocking/ticking a few months ago. He took it to a mechanic and was told it was expensive and he should just drive it until it fails. The other day hes driving down the highway and something gives and it starts knocking real loud.

Thats how it is right now. It starts, didn't seem to idle well, but knocks like a son of a beach. No idea yet why. Bearing or something. I'm almost certain the motor needs to be pulled to be repaired.

Originally I was hoping it was a I6 motor cause I got a rusted out 96 Cherokee with a good I6, but its not and I think it would be too much of a hassle to do a 5.2 to 4.0 swap. I don't think this is an option anymore. If it is an easy swap let me know.

1. I could just sell it, as is for $500?. (It already came with 4 nice tires @ 75% tread that I'm keeping. Guy was gonna run the current tires and put these on next winter.)

2. I could part it out. Thats a good amount of work and your always sitting on parts for awhile, but I could probably make...$1000?

3. I could pull the motor, repair/replace, then keep or sell the whole truck for ... $2000?

a good running 5.9 from a truck can be had for under 500$ in most locations. you seem like you're up for the task of working on it yourself.

that rust would keep me from dumping anything more than that into it though.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

bit of rust there. i wouldnt be adverse to dropping a 5.9 in it and wheeling the piss out of it. you certainly got a good enough deal. once it dies, then part it out

I'm won't be wheeling this. I'm gonna sell it or keep it as a driver.

I also don't think I'm up for doing an engine swap. I don't own a cherry picker and I'm not a great mechanic. I'd most likely pay someone to install. To buy a motor and have it installed would be about $1000.

I could do the body work, already have brand new rockers just sitting in the garage.

if it was me, id put a 5.9 in it and make it a rice eater. but since you dont want to swap engines, i think your only options are to part it or sell it as is.

The last Jeep I parted out (a 2000 xj) made me $4000. But it took 3 months and tied up the garage. So if you have room and time, parting it out would net you the most, PM me if you go that way and I will be your first customer.

Damn $4000! Parts are selling slow and cheap around here. I don't see making anywhere near that. Max, max $1500 and a lot of time and work. Removing and selling. $1200 profit I'm thinking.

Or pay $1000 have someone else do the work and all I gotta do is sell it and make $800 profit.

Considering he woukd need to find a 9er to make it work

Not really. A 360 bolts right into a 96-98 ZJ. This is what you need:

96-98 ZJ V8
5.9 flexplate
5.9 harmonic balancer
5.9 driver's side motor mount

the 5.9 doesnt even need to come out of a ZJ. it can be from a dodge truck or van

its been said that the 5.2 computer could run the 5.9, but its best to use the 5.9 computer. the wiring harness is the same

I don't see me making this a 'niner'. If it increases the value I would consider but I don't think it does.

How much is this truck worth if I install a used motor with 130,000-140,000 miles, repair the rockers and clean up the inner door rust?
