What r the best Spark Plugs to buy for a JGC?

Well I am going to change the spark plugs and do the gasket on my differential cover this coming up weekend. What is the best spark plug to buy? Are the splitfires and the platnum 4s as good as people say? Are there better ones? Should I redo the wires too?

dont waste your money on the platinum pulgs. or on the over priced champion plugs. get a set of ngk v-power copper core plugs. you should be able to order them through your local auto parts store (napa, autozone, car quest etc...) they chould be about 1.25 each and will work great

you can replace the wires if you want to. most people do. unless you are going to replace the ignition controler with something like the msd or crane cam fireball and the coil, dont get the ultra premium wires. .

You really think that they are a waste of money? Well I appreciate the input I will have to stop by Autozone today and pick some up. Thanks.

I'm a fan of platinum plugs. The electrode takes longer to wear away on them, meaning you get more miles out of them. I just use there regular Bosch Plats or Autolite ones.

Do you think it is a good idea to use the standard platnum plugs because the engines in these jeeps burn on the hotter side? I have heard that the platnum plugs are good for hot burning engines. What is your take on it folks?

Just get proper heat range for your engine.

Spark Plugs

Hi there,

I have tried several different brands of sparks plugs over the years in my 93 JGC. Im the original owner of my Jeep which now has almost 350,000 KMS on it. So you can see I have replaced my plugs several times.

For my first replacement set I bought the Bosch Platinums. The second set I bought Autolite Platinums. Third set I bought NGK V Power. The most recent set I have returned back to the OEM which is Champion.

From my experience I didnt feel any benefits with the platinums. In my opinion the Champion plugs performed just as well if not better than the rest. I am sticking with Champions from now on.

Oh yeah not sure where Joseph lives but where I live Champion Copper plugs are the cheapest of the bunch. You can buy them for a $1.25 CDN each or less than a dollar US.

The heat range of a spark plug is the plugs ability to get rid of heat. They typically do this by changing the length of the plug. So a longer plug takes more time to dissipate heat and is called a Hot plug. I have no idea what heat range jeep uses, so I always use what they recommend. The engine can not get more power from choosing “better plugs”. And obviously, choosing a plug with more than one electrode can not increase the power either.

Bosch Platinums aren't worth the cost of the cardboard they come in. I put a set in my zj and my wife's intrepid, and in both cars, the electrodes were gone within 6mo. It was so bad in the intrepid that it wouldn't even start. IMO, go with NGK V-Power.

Off the topic

Hi jeepme79,

I noticed your are running 245/75-16 tires. Is that on the stock wheels or aftermarket one? Is your Jeep raised?

Thanks.

Stock wheels, no lift yet. I had to trim the little inside corner of the front bumper, and I get a little rub at full turn. They are also 'E' rated, so the ride is a little stiffer. I'm looking for a small lift and going to 265/75 16's next.

How about asking for the right spark plugs for your engine instead of the car. Knowing the car doesn't help some one answer as well.

Plus 4s are crap.

If you have the V8, don't buy Champion plugs. In fact, whatever plugs you buy, open one at the store and inspect it. If it requires the large (I can't remember sizes right now) socket, then you won't be able to install it, there isn't enough clearance between the plug and the plug well to fit a socket wrench. Go for the plugs (such as NGK's) that use the smaller sized socket.

on 4.0s, some people use the shorter plugs that the 4.0L Cherokees use (at least the ones from the early 90s, I believe). They say using the shorter plugs addresses the pinging issue. I haven't tried them yet. Anyone done this?

I did the plugs last night. I just used Bosch copper plugs. They were $0.99 and work just great. I was told they they are nicer than the Champion copper and that they were all that I needed.
