What is this in my engine compartment?

I am mechanically stupid - what is the somewhat rectangular black-cased device in the link below...and is it supposed to make a rhythmic ticking sound?

Thanks!

96' JGC V-8 5.2L ltd.
way too much to list.

Thanks folks. The issues I have been having with this freaking thing lately I am gun-shy to every noise it makes. Appreciate the help a lot.

Now if only someone could diagnose my lack of strong heat without me flushing a heater core in 30 degree weather, that would be cool...lol

I'm afraid to ask, what model Grand do you have?
Actually, I'm tired, time to go to bed...If a Limited take a look at the wjjeeps.com site and view the instuctions to check for diagnostic codes.

It's a pump that checks the fuel system for leaks. Leave your fuel cap loose & drive around for a little & you will get a check eng light with that code.
