what issue am i looking at here?
Noticed a piddle under the jeep today and this is what I saw when I slid under. What is going on because I have no clue. I just changed the fluid about 2000 km ago.

could be diff oil brake fluid I'm not sure. but if you take of ur diff cap stick your finger in and you should be able to get it on the tip if not then it's low and it could be what's leaking.

If it's diff fluid, there is no mistaking the smell of 80w90 or similar oils. How is the level in the diff?

Probably the seal, which usually means the bearings going out. Much work ahead.

What would cause a seal to go? Anything to do with driving habits or is it just a regular maintenance issue.

There could be a groove cut in your drveshaft or the axle is building pressure inside of it,pushing the grease out

The seals do rot/wear out themselves. Take a look at the bearing while your in there. or look for metal in the diff fluid.

So I tried to do the fix this evening and read that I needed a 1-1/8" socket to take the pinion nut off but when I went to take it off the socket I bought was to small. Can anyone confirm what size the pinion nut is on a D44?

30mm should do it.
Use an impact if you have it.
