What is this hole on this NV242 ?
Hey, there is a hole on this NV242 i was going to buy right by the little shift plate thing. Its a 97 242, unknown mileage the guy who is selling it to me said it has around 100k on it.
The transfercase itself look in good condition, and the front and back tailshaft and U joint end seem to turn with ease, and the chain seemed to be tight when i twisted the ends back and forth as i didnt hear any kind of backlash.
I decided not to buy it and hold off tho until i could figure out what this hole is for because i couldnt find it on the NP249 in my Jeep. From what i have found by searching online there is suppose to be some kind of rubber plug there, and its a access hole to some kind of pin or something. Im just not sure if i should buy the case with this plug missing because i dont know if that pin is still in there or something. Is there anyway to tell if the pin is still in the transfercase by just looking through the hole ?
The guy wants $220 for the case with the shift linkage and the Bezel.
Here is are pictures of the transfer case, tell me what you guys think please the guy is an hour away from me so i was a little disapointed in not returning home with it, gas is killing me driving to where he lives.

Get a 231. The 242 hangs too low.

There's suppose to be a rubber /plastic plug in that hole . It's exposed to the internal shift mechanism and the rest of the case .
I would not buy that case if the input shaft is rusted as it appears . Looks like it's been outside for a yr or more

the 231 being a smaller case , offers more clearance .
The 231 in a 5.9 , stock ? My preference yes , I like simple old school stuff , but no AWD . I would do the 242 over the 231 in the swap .
Ideally , you should just get that ebay VC , new bearings for the front output shaft (2),the rear shaft(1) and the output shaft seals . Your good for another 100K .
If you don't wheel it , the 249 is the best case for the 5.9 .

I thought about it, but i just dont want to have to take a risk of those ebay VC dying on me 20k miles later to where i have to spend another $300 as i have heared they are from china or something.
I dunno, I dont go wheeling its just a DD thats getting anoying to drive with a bad vc and wearing out my tires.
Maybe your right, the 242 swap seems like more pain then its worth, potential drive shaft shortening, linkage problems, finding a bezel.. When i could change 1 part on mine and be done with it.
Which VC did you buy for your Jeeps on ebay. If you say yours has been working for 3 years or so, then id like to buy from the same supplier you did
Was it this one .

I did my swap from 249 to 242 for about $320, $100 for the transfer case, $120 to ship it and $100 for a rebuild kit. By hanging low, they mean what you see below, but you'll notice that it's not really any lower than the crossmember or the cat. Not by much anyway.

I would pass. Rusty and likely needs new seals. Who knows what the insides look like.
I looked into a similar condition case recently and said hell no. Find something better.

I think I have the mantrans in my 5.9 , and have the acerl in my Orvis . The Orvis got a part rebuild including the bearings and seals mention , plus the chain . Chain was fine though . The bearings I would still recomend . My Orvis is quieter that my 5.9's 249
