What DUMB things have you done to your ZJ?

I'm sure we've all got our stories to tell, I'll start with a recent one...

My ZJ was off the road for almost a month while I waited for radiator parts to come in. At the start of the month I'd replaced the front coil spring isolators, and afterwards I put the lower shock bolts back on, but only finger-tight. I was going to torque them up when I finally finished the radiator job. A month later the parts arrived, got them installed, went off for short test drive, everything fine...

But I'd forgotten to torque the shock bolts.

Drove to work, and on the way took my regular shortcut across a piece of very rough waste ground. ZJ started feeling weird, the suspension was clunking much more than usual, and the front end was bouncing up and down. The shock bolts, of course, were completely gone... fortunately there was no damage to the axle or the lower shock mountings.

I think we've all got a story like that. I needed to replace a brake caliper. Since the pads were also shot I decided to do a front brake job as well. I was in a bit of a time crunch as I had to go to work soon, but everything went fine. Was a little tricky getting the old caliper off as it was seized up and basically clamped on the disc. But a hammer took care of that. Anyway, I got everything done. Put the tires back on hand tightened the lugs dropped it of the jack stands and off to work. Unfortunately I forgot one very important step. I didn't re-tighten the lugs once it was on the ground. I got to work fine, but on the way home there was a bit of a problem. I was driving down the road and I hear a ping sound, as if someone threw a rock at my Jeep. Then I heard another and then another. On the third one I could see something bouncing next to My jeep. I got out to see what it was and it was one of the three lug nuts that fell off. Luckily I was a mile from my house and had a couple of spare lugs floating around. No damage to the lug bolts or rim. I got really lucky. I could have been driving on the highway when that happened.

Thought my jeep would get through anything with bigger tires and no lift.....failed many times. Bent the idler pulley bolting the bracket over it. I always end up with some extra bolts/screws from time to time. Broke egr tube doing intake gasket....still broken... Most recent getting my jeep stuck and while pulling it out, ripped my rocker panel off and damaged my fender. There are probably a lot more as well...

Forgot to tighten power steering pump bracket, therefore when I turned...pump flew into the fan. Pump lasted 2yrs, starting to go out now.

Snapped an axle didn't have funds to replace but I got tired of the constant banging of the loose axle took it out including the axle joint and only put back the wheel bearing caliper and wheel tire.... all good until I took the first turn outta drive way and tire came off ruined wheel bearing and caliper.

Thought my exhaust would sound good as a turndown right behind the muffler, so I cut the tailpipe clean off.

It didn't sound very good.

Had a bb on for three years and finally got a four inch. Me and a buddy fought for three weekends getting it on. Took so long cause of schedules we only had one day a weekend to work. Finally got to the point of putting the stabilizer on and bolting the track bar up and we're done. Its on the ground and the front end is sitting QUITE A BIT higher than the rear. We're like wtf. Realized we didn't take the front spacers out. IDIOT!

let's see...

trying to unbend part of the mount on the fender for the bumper cover after a lady hit my car, i popped the little metal nipple right off...zip ties to the rescue...

stabbed myself with xacto knife in finger getting o rings off injectors...ow...

broken countless clips, lost many screws to dash components...

let a dealership replace something...

Installed exhaust by myself and spent about four hours with a hacksaw on it well after dark....needing it fixed by tomorrow morning...

Told my girlfriend anything about working on the jeep

Bought a junkyard radio...they don't work usually fyi.

I'm sure there is more I will think of...

Ripped the front bumper off several times mudding or offroading, I call it the break away bumper. put "new" tires from my old wj on my "new" zj but didnt get an alignment till a year later when my tires were nearly bald.

Put a Rusty's front TB on it. Also this. Almost made it. J/K not sure if I would have made it with 35's even.

When I bought my ZJ, it still had original shocks. So I replaced them and reused the original bolts. They broke driving though some rough stuff in Alaska. The shock extended, dangling between the wheel and the brake line. Every time I turned left the wheel pinched the brake line causing me to lose my brakes.

Did a routine oil change, forgot to verify removal of old o-ring for the oil filter, it was still on. Upon start up, oil everywhere. Never had a tap until then.
