I took mine back to the shop after having it out for a mere three weeks... first the water pump failed and while repairing that they discovered my radiator was corroded. Now my transcooler is done for :/
I though I was getting a bargain when I paid $250 (not a typo) for my 97 ZJ 5.2L but I guess not...

I would love to find a 5.2 for 200$ and put 1500$ in and I wouldn't have a problem with it. But that's just me

Sounds like a crap shop. How does a water pump eventually turn into a trans cooler? You still got a deal, but no 14 vehicle will remain a deal unless you learn how to fix it yourself.

I think you meant 14 yr old deal. I got a 4.0 for 200 with a bad ring. Invested 200 into it and traded it for a dirtbike I just sold for 800... everything is relative to what you actually got. Just about any 14 yr old vehicle that is running for $250 is a good deal, but these things go for way more than that even with all their problems. Get used to spending if you don't plan to tackle those things yourself. You may be getting ripped off so I hope you took it to someone you know well. A great mechanic is worth wayyyy more than you ever pay them and I for one tip a minimum of 20% above what they ask.... especially to my friends. You got a great deal at $250 for that ZJ, even if it has an engine problem and a bent (dare I say) frame, only thing that's relative here is how hard are you willing to work on it?
Back on topic: Got it back from clay today and he removed my broken off stud transmission pan bolt, so it's leaking like normal after all my messing with it over this weekend to plumb in a cooler.. such is life but I'm glad I drove it home, confidently tonight!
EDIT: Must add that my friend who traded me for the dirtbike fixed the 4.0 for around 450 bucks and sold it for around 2k. Yeah, you got a great deal!

At $250 you have to expect some repairs... I bought my '96 for 1200$ and have put around 2K in it, and I'm just getting started!
