The 242 is in and operating as designed.

Quite a bit quieter than the one one I just replaced. The little bit of fluid I drained out was pretty brown, almost like motor oil, but I could see a red tint. I'm thinking it was the factory fill

Swapped out the allen key drain and fill plugs with the 30mm 6 point plugs from one of the others in my collection and filled it up with ATF+4.

Well of course, right when I get the ZJ up and running another issue popped up. The voltage gauge started slowly dropping down and eventually went to zero and the check gauges light came on. Had it tested at a parts store and the alternator failed. It was a reman 90A from pep boys IIRC. Lasted about 2 1/2 years.

Picked up a new, not reman, 120A alternator at napa last night. Took the battery out and put it on the charger, had the new one in in 45 min and all seems well now.

Really hoping that that was the actual issue and it's not the voltage regulator in the PCM.

Gave it back to my daughter after major repair

When she first had it towed home, I said it was totaled. she was so sad. So I bought a parts ZJ and spent about 20-30 hours fixing this. Easily could have scrapped it and bought her something else, but It's a Jeep thing!

Just finished up a 2 day project of replacing the rear main seal.

Why two days? Because nothing involving the oil pan on this thing is ever easy X.x

Getting very irritated with the jeep.

Can't even creep downhill with the manual cause the computer thinks it needs to keep firing the injectors the same instead of decel mode. Translation: sputters and farts downhill and speeds up, forcing me to ride the brakes. It only does this is 1st gear, and 2nd (under 1800 rpm).

If I'm in 2nd gear above 1800 rpm, or 3rd/4th/5th (at any rpm) it goes to decel mode every time I let off the throttle like it should. If I'm going downhill in 3rd, it stays in decel mode and prevents the jeep from gaining speed as quickly (for the most part)

This leads me to think it has something to do with how fast I am going.

Something is telling it to do that and I am getting tired of trying to figure it out. I don't remember having this problem with the swap until this year, which makes me think it is something other than just the PCM itself.

Id love to just gut everything and run simple gauges, along with a Mercedes diesel at this point. I'd have all the compression braking I could ever want then. And no PCM bullcrap causing goofy driving conditions.

Can't get the auto flashed off the PCM cause there isn't anybody nearby to do it, and none of the guys like flyinryan respond to emails.

Frustrating, I wish the 93 donor I had was in better shape, would've just drove it.

So go get an om617 and do it.

I want to see it.

Intercool it so you can bump the boost or you will hate yourself for power.

Here's the adapter: http://www.mercedesdiesel4x4.com/category_s/1831.htm

Hell do the 6 speed out of the late tj.

Be cheaper to just get the pcm tuned?

Or run megasquirt!

Well, I safely made it into work. Engine didn't blow up or **** out a bunch of oil and muck on the way.

That alone makes me say it was a successful repair, but we'll see if the oil leaking is slowed at all.

so, this weekend, I started to bedliner (rustoleum rattle can) the grill and bumper, body moldings are next. whole thing needs new paint, but that is later. got it registered, and insured, so I can drive it legally now.. ordered my new carpets, and need to get it to my mechanic for suspension work. also put on new headlights, only to find out both my side turn signals are dead. fronts and rear work, but corners don't. oh well, that should just be burned out bulbs..

It will be very tempting if a cheap one pops up on CL. I've seen em on there for cheap every once in a while.

Google search pulls up a guy that put one in a WJ along with an aw4.

Got the jeep up and at it again. New starter and battery did the trick.

Plugged the IAC in again and drove it around for about an hour, pretty decent drivability but..

still no compression braking in 1st (whether it be going straight or downhill which is disappointing) or 2nd gear under 1800 rpm.
