My 5.2 usually averages about 12-13 with normal driving. My high numbers right now are because of my highway driving I've been doing. When my ZJ was stock, I want to say I got roughly 14-15 city and once, hand calculated, managed 26 mpg from Schererville IN to South Bend IN and back. I can't explain that one. One thing I recently did, that I didn't really take into consideration that probably had a positive effect on my mileage was my intake manifold gasket. I was leaking pretty badly, as evidenced by my oil stains on my driveway and the back of my block being covered in oil. With a 5.2, you have to watch for the plenum gasket blowing out. It's pretty common and affects performance and mpg. I fixed mine over a year ago with a 1/4" aluminum plate, new bolts, and new gaskets. That's when my intake started to leak because I used the cork pieces and only RTVed the corners rather than the front and rear. I enjoy working on my 5.2 over the 4.0 any day as well. I've grown up working on V6s and V8s.

Go for the 5.2. You'll love it.

Sorry almost missed this, I'm actually a pretty good negotiator. But this guy is a hard ***. Doesn't really care that I wrecked mine, played that card already. I've already given him a reasonable offer, a little more than the book price. He's had it posted for a month so I'm hoping I can wait him out a bit then basically go "hey if you still haven't sold it I have cash in hand" and bring him to a reasonable price. That is of course if I don't go with one of the 5.2's instead .

Ah how you're tempting me. Well I shot the guy an email, obviously I still have to see it for myself and make sure there's no issues. Regardless I'm still waiting on a check so there's no imminent rush. This is the one I was referring to http://maine.craigslist.org/cto/4194234196.html same color scheme as my 94 which just bit the dust. 180k on the 4.0 is nothing, but this I'm less familiar with the 5.2 so idk how it compares. At the bare minimum when the funds clear I'll check it out and I can see for myself what kind of mpg it has with a light foot.

That doesn't seem too bad. There are plenty of 5.2s with over 300k on them. As long as it was taken care of, the 180k shouldn't be anything. The electronics are more reliable on the 5.2 than the 4.0... Just another thing to think about. At 180k, if the plenum hasn't been fixed, there's a good chance it'll need to be fixed. Also, I'm sure you know about it, but the 249 probably has a bad VC with that mileage. It's an easy repair with either a new VC or a transfer case swap.

Yeah the VC was starting to go on mine to, but even at 206,000 it was only noticeable on one really tight uphill turn I did whenever I turned around on my street. Probably needed a plenum gasket to now that I think about it, I lived with the extra quart of oil between changes. The good thing about both of those is that even if they're needed it's not urgent and I can take care of them when warmer weather comes around. And they'd also give me good ammo to drive the price down .

If you go to look at it, bring a 19 mm wrench or socket to pull the air hat off and a flashlight. That way you can open the throttle body and see if there's oil in it. If there is, it'll need a plenum gasket. 4.0s don't have the issue.

Stared at it cuz I didn't get enough time to work on it
Would a 2" bb and 30" or 31" tires be harmful overall in a zjs life span? 5.2 v8, 203k miles.

Realistically, they will probably shorten the life of the drivetrain components. All that stuff is replaceable. I'd say it's worth the risk.

Really anything thats not preventative maintenance on a vehicle will shorten its lifespan but its a risk that most of us on JF have already taken many times over and i guarantee theres very few of us who regret it

I just got done changing all 4 rotors and pads to stop the metal clashing sound coming from the rear....The guy who owned it before either drove the Jeep until the little wear indicators on the brakes broke off, or he broke them off themselves. Crazy how close I was to getting metal to metal in the front. I was already touching in back, which why I replaced them (I didn't hear the little screeching sound at all since owning it June of this year.) . I also did the parking brake pads, I almost have a working parking brake, just need more tweaking with the little gear inside the rotors.

Oh well, no more pulsing brakes.

My leaking transmission fluid = transmission pan gasket blew out!? Never leaked before until then, who knows? So What I did today to the ZJ, was filter, fluid, and band adjustments. Everything is nice and tight again!
