Looking for info on changing gear oil in a 98zj. Front and rear. Anything helps. I don't know where to find the particular diff info. I know I am opening myself to ridicule and rude comments but hey, I need info, so as long as the comments come with answers...bring it on.

75-140 is spec'd but 80-90 works if you don't tow. If you have lsd in the back (tow package I think) you need to add a friction modifier or use a diff oil with it already there like royal purple.

I just did both rears in mine and dumped royal purple 75-140 in both, I think the PO had used cheap crap and no friction modifier in the back of the niner and now the LSD in back works much better.

I can think of two tow package equipped ZJs that don't have LSD, one of which is mine. You should have a little tag, if you're the first person to open up the diff, on one side telling you you have 3.73:1 gears and if it's an LSD, there should be a little tag on the other side of the diff cover notifying you of that. If the tags are gone, you can jack up the rear of the Jeep and spin one rear wheel. If the other rear wheel spins opposite of the one you're spinning, you have an open diff and don't need friction modifier. If it spins the same way, you have an LSD and need to use 75W-140 with friction modifier.

I'd hit it with some brake clean while its open and take a real good look at your gears looking for chips or unusual wear. Make sure you wipe it all out the bottom and let it dry before you fill it back up. (the brake clean that is, it might take awhile if you wait for any gear oil to dry) ;-)

96 ZJ sittin up 6" on 35's with 4:56's and a 12k winch. Cuz...why the hell not!?

Today I'm getting ready to take her to pick up my bosses 20' flatbed to haul one of my old cars 45 miles to the junkyard. They told me they would give me $300. Then of course I'll try to find things on my 'list' while I'm there lol

20' flatbed + old car + 45 miles + towed by a ZJ = god I hope that's lighter than my math suggests.

It's probably not, but if he's got trailer brakes, it'll be ok if he loads it well. I pulled another ZJ with mine, about 6300 lbs including the trailer. And I was dumb enough to drive over 350 miles on the highway with it It was definitely pushing the limit of what the ZJ could handle, but it was stable and certainly manageable.

Got an email from the seller 3/16" wall structural tubing and poly bushings all greasable seems a bit thin but lifetime warranty on the arms and 5 year warranty on the bushings doesn't seem like a bad idea, good reviews and feedback

No trailer brakes that's the worst part. Got to allow for plenty of stopping space lol
