haha you use the 2 most maintenance intensive vehicles i know of to compare against a new wrangler but really though you should think about the diesel

It would definitely move your hair. You've got to be in the 155+ range for it to start affecting your breathing. I've only been in a handful of cars with that kind of range and they were 4 kW +, at least 2 18s, and walled off. Also, batteries aren't the best way to help with voltage issues. They'll help deliver the extra current you need, but if the alternator can't keep up with the current demand at 14.4 or 13.8 V (whatever it charges at), you're going to get a voltage drop. Your charging system needs to be sufficient as well as the battery(ies).

Don't get so lost in after market parts that you end up with another money pit!

The first gen JK's have more engine and axle problems than anything else. The new JK seems to have solved these problems atleast for now. We'll see how well they are holding up in a few years.

I already hate myself for liking it so much. My pride as a ZJ guy stings deep at the thought of a JKU being "trading up".

But OH GOD THE AFTERMARKET. Quadratec sends me a bunch of catalogs, and they all have a couple pages for XJs and the rest is TJ and JK as far as you can flip pages. I'm drooling already.

The new JK doesn't use the 3.8 junker and has D44s at both ends. It's at the very least an improvement.

I wish they were making a diesel. It'd be neat as hell. It'd also be expensive and push a $40k Jeep to $46k.

Believe me, my pride as a Grand Cherokee guy is hurt because this JK is so good. If I could afford a WK2, I'd be going that route, but I can't, but I can afford a JKU and I don't think that would be settling either.

So there's my plan.

1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited

I drove in the Jeep, sat in the Jeep and slept in the Jeep for the last 24 hours while traveling to the northwest region of Iowa to pick up a motorcycle my uncle had given me for free.

The Jeep drove flawlessly for the 1200 mile round trip, not one hiccup and it was basically driving for at least 20-22 of the hours. 211,XXX miles and I couldn't be happier with it, honestly. Averaged somewhere around 17-18 mpg throughout the entire trip, various drivers with different driving habits.

Pretty beat up and crusty, but it should be a pretty interesting project and learning experience.
