So it appears, checking the FSM. The question now is, can I leave it unplugged when I swap it, and will it work with the non-VAPS steering gear, or is it possible and easier to mount the 4.0 PS pump to the 5.2?

Always the little complications, these things.

anyways... im real nervous about the amount of work, right now shes getting a new power steering pump, PS fluid flush, new valve cover gaskets, oil change, front end alignment, horn wire harness and fuse replaced, and all my trans cooler lines tore out and replaced. ive been without it for a week and two days now. im going into withdrawal. im out of the denial stage and im into the "sit at home on a dip and coffee binge, reading diesel world in my pajamas on a saturday" stage. OT: picked up Bosch Icon Wiper blades for it today, anyone have good luck with these?
That's way too long for that lil bit of stuff! I would look real closely at the labor you are billed.

I dunno what happens if you leave it unplugged, but you should be able to put the 4.0 PS pump on there. The variable steering assist was a 96 Limited thing only, most ZJs don't have it. I wouldn't bother trying to keep it.

Looked it up, the non-VAPS pump is the same part number between both 4.0 and 5.2. Worst case, I swap pumps to make this work. Now I just need to get the trans cooler lines disconnected from the tranny, get the driveshafts off, and disconnect the t-case shifter, then it'll be ready to be hoisted. If I had a hoist.

true that! however i do have a very good relationship with these guys, and when he phoned me to tell me it would take longer, he promised that there would be no extra labor cost and that i am still paying the original estimate. so im relieved to at least know that. ive been with them since i bought the zj, and my dad has been using them for 18 years before that. so they know the deal with us. they always hook me up its awesome.

Did they fit tightly into the sockets? I got some off Ebait for the low voltage lighting along my driveway, can't seem to keep the things in the sockets. I don't think the plastic bases on mine are thick enough. Every time we get high winds, they would fall out. And yes, the light covers are in place.

I actually did this yesterday, but I finally got a stuck drain plug out of my TC and drained and filled that. Took a hammer, Pipe nipple extractor, and impact wrench to finally get it out. The fluid looked like milky prune juice. Yuck!

I've got everything taken care of that I can without an assistant on the donor Jeep. Gonna have to hustle with a couple of buddies to get the green one prepped and swapped in reasonable time. Might have to wait until next week.

In other news, my cat, Baby, died of heart disease tonight. We were at an emergency vet to have her put to sleep because her condition took a turn for the severe, but she didn't even make it long enough to be put down.

Bye-bye, silly kitty.

My moms border collie, mudder, went a few weeks ago, he didn't make it long enough to be put down either. Was given a month made it two weeks. If that.... Vet missed him by twenty minutes

P0171 Fuel System Too Lean Bank 1 (I have I6 so not sure if its the upstream or downstream sensor)
The cat light was flashing on the scanner (wondering if this is to indicate the o2 sensor associated with the cat)

Have 3 of the common symptoms of this code:

Lack of power (consistant lack of power)
Poor idle (not consistantly bad but idles poor at times)
Hesitation upon acceleration (only a tiny bit from each dead stop at a stop sign or light)

Since the cat was replaced about 23k ago with a Magnaflow unit I assume that the cat is fine and it probably has a bad o2 sensor?

The guy recommended having a shop back pressure test the cat and check the o2 sensor. I am the kind of guy to DIY diagnostics and fixing of problems so any input/help would be great.

Thanks

the key dance doesn't work with 98 ZJs - kind of a pain in the butt.

Smack your catalytic converter with a rubber mallet - do you hear a rattle? That could be the issue.

Other than that, it could be time for an O2 sensor. Generally it's the upstream that goes poopoo, unless you have a bad/plugged cat, then it can foul the downstream.
