What is this?

Hey all,
As the title says...what is this thing here in the pic? After I replaced my headlight housings yesterday I heard a clicking sound coming from this cylindrical assembly. I put my hand on it and I can feel it as well. What is it and what is it's purpose? Is it a bad a thing if it's making that clicking sound?

Oh yeah...'96 ZJ, 4.0 I6 auto.

Like said above, its the purge valve for the evaporative emissions system. What it is doing is cycling a vacuum solenoid which purges fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the engine via vacuum line. The reason it is clicking is because the PCM operates this solenoid with a on/off duty cycle.

sweet. thanks for the info guys, I really appreciate it. Last thing I need is another problem with the Metal Machine right now. It's nice to know that I've got access to a great bunch of informed jeep guys. Thank you again.

That's a flux-capacitor, your jeep uses this part for time travel.

Yep, I had to have mine replaced because I would keep getting to work 2 years early.

If at first you don't succeed, use more speed.
