water pump gasket troubles

I replaced the water pump, thermostat, and gaskets to each about a month ago and now both leak slightly. Used RTV but i think i used to much and didn't let it cure for 24 hours. Anybody have any tips on before i redo it this weekend? Its a 98 Grand Cherokee, inline 6.

you may have tightened it too tight and / or put together to soon... a light bead is better. Just let it set for a few minutes... I use Indianhead cement on the removable part,as in the water pump.. Regular blue permatex on the gasket where it attaches to the engine.... Usually all the gasket then sticks to the part I remove. Besides you can let the rebuilder worry about scraping gaskets then...

RTV and a gasket? Pick one, not both.

When I replaced mine, I just made sure the surfaces were clean and then used only the gasket. Torque to specs...
