Volt meter drops when put in rev. gear

95 4.0 42re np249;

When I put gear selector in reverse the volt/ammeter swings down to the low end of scale.

Put it in nuetral or drive or park it shoots back up to 13-14 volt range.

Weird, anybody seen this before?

does the idle speed drop significantly when you put it in reverse?

Jeez, how many amps you running through your back-up lights? You should probably be able to light up an airfield with that much lighting.

No significate idle speed drop from park to reverse. The same amount of drop when put into drive from nuetral, and ammeter doesnt drop when I go between those positions.

The GC is totally stock so no beefy Hella type reverse lights sucking up all the volts lol.

Thanks for the replies, I'm gonna go out and check it out. I'll post up in a few.

there is no way the reverse lights can draw that much power unless theres some massive short to ground in the reverse light circuit.

I kind of hope he knew I was kidding. does make you wonder about a short though. If not the lights themselves maybe in a trailer connector or something similar.

i know you were messin with him lol, but yea if he has a trailer harness and the wires are frayed and touching the frame that could be your short

OK, so after looking at the reverse lights I saw they were real dim. Removed tail lite, took out left rev. lite bulb, other bulb went bright and gauge didn't move. Put old bulb back in and now everythings fine.

I guess the connection was bad or something,go figure.

You know that damn VIC with all its bull probably played a part, I don't know.

thanks guys,now on to the new squeaky pulley track down.

its never that easy. something might be frayed somewhere, i would remove the taillight housing and see if the connectors are worn and fix if necessary. takes 10min and a safe way to confirm you dont have a short.
