Viscous Coupler

I changed my NP 249 transfer case about a year ago (because of viscous coupler) with another late model NP 249 (95 T-Case 125,000 miles) and a year later it is having the same problems with the viscous coupler.

-I was wondering what causes the viscous coupler to go bad?

-Also i wanted to know if it is possible to change out the viscous coupler and not the whole T-Case?(directions)

-Any prevenative work besides keeping t-case fluid clean after i change t-case or coupler?

-Will a bad catalytic converter cause any trouble?

The viscous coupler goes bad when the rear wheels keep spinning faster then the front. Sort of like a clutch the VC overheats and starts to leak fluid out whic causes the thing to lock up. That is what I was told when I burned mine up.

If I were you I would scrap the 249 for a 242!!!! I did. My gas milage got a little better, tires don't squeel around bends and I can now do burn outs.

If you realy like having the AWD the full time 4x4 mode on the 242 does very well. I climb a lota snowy hills in the winter and never had to use the part time 4x4 (locked).

If you wana do the swap and have any questions let me know. just give me a little time to respond back.

Later,
Ian

They are sensitive to different sized tires on the front and rear axles, so you should ensure that you have same size, and same approximate wear on the front and back, (same inflation pressure too)

Does the linkage between the transmission have to be modified, and what about the 4WD shift lever
