used 93-94 grands

im looking at used 93-94 grand cherokees on ebay. had a few questions about them. was hoping to get some answers from some experienced owners.

the jeeps in my price range have 140k+ miles. how much life will these jeeps give? i dont want to buy one and have to sink a ton of money into repairs. are there any common repairs that happen around this mileage? ive noticed a few jeeps listing 'rebuilt or new trannys'. do they tend to fail around 150k miles? what other major repairs could i expect at these higher mileages?

if anyone wants to trade their 93-94 grand cherokee for a mild street 355ci v8 s10...talk to me

I believe it would be safe to say that between 140 – 200k miles; a Jeep will indeed need a couple thousand dollars of repairs. It is impossible to tell, especially without a history of that jeep, but it could go another 60K without investing a lot or it could go another 20K and fall apart. If this is going to be your only vehicle and you have nothing in your saving account, then I would advise against it. There are several cars that could prove to be more reliable. You could wait a year or two or even three and save up more for a jeep that is under ten years old.
Trouble Spots:
Air conditioner - If the air conditioner gradually stops cooling, the computer (PCM) may not be sending a signal to the compressor clutch relay to cycle off, which causes the A/C evaporator to freeze up. (1993-95)
Automatic transmission - If the transmission will not engage when first started, chances are the torque converter is draining down. A check valve in the fluid line leading to the transmission cooler should remedy the problem. (1993)
Automatic transmission - The transmission won't up shift for about the first quarter mile in cool weather due to defective cast iron seal rings in the governor drive. (1993-94)
Engine misfire - Rough idle and stalling can be traced to a defective idle air control motor. (1993-94)
Oil consumption and engine knock - Oil pump gear wear results in bucking and surging when the engine is warm and lack of lubrication when the engine is cold. (1993)
Oil leak - The rear main seals on 4.0-liter engines are prone to leakage if the vehicle is operated in dirty conditions. (1993-96)
Oil leak - A chronic oil leak at the filter on 5.2-liter engine is likely due to a warped adapter plate. (1995)
Transmission leak - Automatic transmission fluid leaks from the speed sensor in the transmission. (1993-94)

First off, buying ANYTHING with that much mileage on it is asking for trouble.
Look a little harder. You KNOW that as soon as you got this, you will see ten
others with "for sale" signs on them that you SHOULD have bought.

On the particular model you are asking about, one very common problem is the leaking of condensate water from the A/C under the dash into the electrics there.

I would suggest you use that money as a down payment on something with a little more life left in it.

140k is alot of miles but there is still plenty of life in said jeep.....hell mine has over 210k on it and some of those were damn hard earned ones.....my 87 has 243k when i sold it 3 yrs ago. dont let those miles scare you, yeah some things are gonna break along the way but that is the case with any vehicle you can buy. the trans can suck, mine took a crap on me this past christmas at 208K....i think i got my moneys worth. if you see a 93 with a aw4 buy it. dont let those miles scare ya...a 4.0 can go forever if maintained.

I had a 94 Grand Cherokee that I sold with 148K. It leaked oil, the ABS brakes no longer worked, and the AC quit. It ran fine though. The original tranny was solid and the motor (4.0 I6) was pushing the Jeep good. The drivetrain was very solid for me. I just had a lot of the other small stuff go wrong. Also like stated above. Keep looking REALLY hard untill you find the perfect Jeep and the right price. Just don't jump at one you can afford.

the one im looking at is a 93. 4.0 I6. heres the ad:

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4. This vehicle runs and drives well considering its age. When i first bought the truck i invested about $1k in tune up parts, fluids serviced, fuel pump, water pump, front rotors/pads, front and rearend components as prevenative maintenance which really paid off this past year and a half. The only real problem i have to report is when the gas tank has more than 3/4 tank, it will leak during hard accelaration and braking. But other than that at 1/2 tank, i have seen no signs of leakage and have been driving it daily.

I consider this vehicle to have been well maintained. On the inside the carpet and ceiling are clean and in good condition. The seats have no rips or cracks in the leather. Other than nicked up front / rear bumpers and a ding in the drivers side door, the metallic green exterior is in decent condition. The truck comes with a Hogan Bra but does not have a tow package. Overall the truck runs and drives well. Starts up with no problems or smoke. Engine has plenty of life. The trans. shifts tight. The transfercase functions as it should but please note that this is the alltime allwheel drive case. There is no 2 wheel drive option for this truck. Only low range 4x4. I would also like to note that one of the the lenses on the foglight was lost so they were removed and the battery was replaced. New back brakes have been included but not installed.

any comments?

I see two problems here...first of all, a gas tank leak? Definitely needs to be fixed!

Secondly, he is saying it is "alltime allwheel drive". This Jeep does not have that option. True, the 249 transfer case does not have a 2wd option, but it automatically switches between 2H and 4H. If it is in all-time 4WD mode, that means the viscous coupler has gone out in the transfer case, and it's gonna cost you about $1k to fix. You can tell if this is the case if you drive it. If you are familiar with 4WD, you know what it feels like on a tight turn on pavement. If you feel this, the VC is toast.

Personally, I would not worry that much about the mileage, but I would probably pass this one up due to the issues he has stated unless you get a great deal on it. Mine has 170k miles and no major problems yet, though the A/C compressor is out. It is a common issue on these year models. Motor/tranny/TC are all good, though.

Don't buy one that has problems. (Unless seller fixes before you buy) You will be able to find a problem free Jeep.

I just bought my 93 off ebay a month ago. It has high miles (195K) but the body is about perfect. I put in a used engine and new radiator. I paid $1350 and as of now only have a total of $1700 in it including the purchase price.
Oh yeah, AW4s are great trannys. That is why I went looking for a 93.

i think the gas tank thing is kinda weird but shouldnt be too much of a problem......

the TC....well maybe the guy wrote all time 4 wheel drive cause thats the best way to describe in an auction. since there isnt a 2wd option the best way to say it would be all wheel drive.....also if the VC is toast its not gonna cost 1000 to fix....either get a used tc...231,242, are dime a dozen....takes less than 30 mins to pull out and cost 150-200 all day if you look around. you can find a 249 as well but then you are back to having the vc problem later in age maybe. i have seen vc's on ebay new for 350 or so. pick your poison most jeeps with this age are gonna have a few things needing fixing on them, grab a manual and some tools and go at it.
