unbolting a heavy duty hitch
My problem is that some of the bolts are just turning round.
if I can remove the rear bumper do I in any way get acces to
the top of the bolts so I can counteract the spinning?
The hitch is rusty so I want it to be sandblasted and painted.
You might as well cut the heads off with a torch or cut off wheel. The "frame rails" of the unit body were tapped in my ZJ, I assume they are all that way. I doubt if you'll be able to get access, and it probably won't do any good anyway.
I thought of that too, but then I will not be able to reinstall?
On my '98, The factory bumper mounted w/ nut plates that were secured through the hitch / skid on the bottom via studs.
The studs have a retaining feature that kinda keeps them from coming out even when the threads are off.
If you get all 4 nuts off + the two bolts in the back (front?) you should be able to kinda shake rattle & roll the thing until the studs fall out and then it just falls off.
The nuts won't always back all the way off the studs.

Maybee I just sandblast- and paint it still attached to the frame together with the axle.
