So with Winter oncoming and here in New England, it's time to begin getting ready to hunker down and pray I need not do any repairs in the cold and snow. naturally I probably will have to, but I can pray.
Anyway, one thing I plan on doing after I get my Exhaust system done is a small tune up. I did a tune up a year ago when I got the jeep, but I only used the cheapest stuff available and didn't think to do the distributor cap and rotor, as I'd never owned a car with one before.
Therefore, I wanted some recommendations on brands/parts for tuneup. Right now, I've a shopping cart on Rockatuo that features:
Champion Copper Plus plugs
United Ignition Wire Ignition Coil
And a tune up kit from United Ignition Wire that includes:
-Wireset
-Cap
-Rotor
-Brass Contacts
Anyone got other recommendations? Planning to swap the Air filter too, as I've yet to do that since getting the vehicle. Any other recommendations? Better brands to look to? Just for a tune up.
I really like the summit house brand tune up kits, the wires are good quality and the cap and rotor are brass. I use them on all my vehicles that have spark plugs.
I give a thumbs up for Uniblurb's recommendations as well. I used his list when I did my last tune up and actually ordered all the parts off amazon as he suggests in his post and the prices were actually even cheaper than he had listed. I also order my oil filters on amazon and get the WIX Filters - 51085. its about 9 bucks and is the only one I have found to make my zj quiet down that and running regular 10w-30 dino oil.
Don't forget about my Kolak Ignition I use only the finest wires from Magnecor, an MSD high output coil, brass terminal cap/rotor and include plugs too. The Magnecor wires are basically a lifetime wire so though they cost more they do indeed last forever. Have customers with sets for 15+ years including me and they are like new.
Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I'll way my options~ @Uniblurb, you're post list is great, but I noticed you didn't mention an Ignition coil at all. Any recommendation on that, just to factor in?
I have no doubt that Kolak ignition upgrade kit is a real good one. But IIRC it was around $200 plus shipping when I received a price quote. Had to watch my $ at the time and while I didn't 'go on the cheap' for low quality parts I probably paid a little more than half that. I'm not 'knocking' Kolak, those wires do look like super good ones, but the Denso wires seem to work fine for my 96 4.0.
PS. I also respect jeepjeepster's opinions/posts on going with an OE Mopar coil but I'm sure it's pretty pricey.
The mopar coil works just fine and is designed to work with the coil driver in the PCM. Mine has been going strong since 1994.... I carry a spare mopar coil just in case.
Its a horrible location for any coil. Too much heat, no real protection from moisture. Yet they keep working. I saw a thread about relocating it to the PDC area and thought about doing it but never did. One mopar mech I spoke with said coils are one of the most misdiagnosed parts. He had a drawer full of them that customers insisted that they be changed out but were perfectly fine. The only problem
I have with accel and other HP coils is they require an adapter harness. Two more connection points. But people do like them and other than a ratmonkey thumbs down I haven't heard bad stuff.
Agree coralman about the terrible location for the coil. And I hated to see all the plastic on the back of mine all cracked up from the block heat but supposedly it doesn't cause problems. Other than the fact road salt getting in that area doesn't help if you're in the salt/rust belt.
As far as the adapter harness for the HP coils believe that may have just been with the 98. You must have a 1-prong coil connector rather than 2-prong? I entered in my 96 4.0, along with the 97, in the below adapter harness which said it didn't fit. But once I entered in the 98 4.0 it said it does.
Kinda of reminds me of the 2-prong connectors on the 98 AC compressor where most all other ZJ's have the 1-prong connector. But just the opposite where the 98 has a 1-prong coil connector where most others have 2-prongs. The unique 98.
