tune up

Hi all,

I noticed this morning that my engine kind of sounds like a diesel engine only when I first put my foot on the accelerator. After 1 or 2 seconds it goes away though and this is accelerating from a stop. Idling seems to be fine and it seemed to drive fine otherwise.

I am in need of an engine tune up (plugs etc.). Is this the probable culprit?

Also, it was about 15 degrees this morning (not sure if that makes a difference).

I'm driving an 03 WJ with the regular 4.7 v8 and have about 130,000.00 miles on it. Just put some new gas in yesterday and had an oil change about 500 miles ago.

Thanks!

Is it like a diesel engine or a freight train? If it only does it coming from a stop it could be the clutch on the fan is going out. It should instantly shut off once it goes over idle and then turn back on when your are stopped at idle to cool the engine.

It's more like a diesel engine. About 2 or 3 clacks and then goes away. After I drove for a while it didn't happen as much but it was still there on and off. Also, if I throw it in neutral and hit the gas the same thing seems to happen.

Thanks for your help!

update on this. It now makes this noise for a continued period of time if you are lightly pressing (continuously) on the gas. Once it gets up into higher rpm's it goes away and when you are at highway speeds it can't be heard. This seems to happen more now when the engine is at normal operating temperatures.

Yesterday when it was about 35-40 degrees outside it didn't seem to do it at all. Today it is about 15 degrees and its doing it worse than originally report. Could it just be the cold and not something to worry about?

From my research it seems like it could be exhaust manifold? I dunno!

I'm bringnig it in for its overdue tune up tomorrow so hopefully that will help.

Thoughts?

is it a tick or a clack? my heep had a tick that was caused by an exhaust leak thru the manifold gasket. simple fix.

It's more of a clack. Also I have the 4.7 and gas mileage, oil pressure and performance seem to be normal. Maybe it's just the cold weather? Should I ask the dealership to check anything in particular or should I just tell them the noise and wait for them to tell me that they can't duplicate?

Thanks!

here's a link that accurately describes my noise. You can hear it around the 3-5 second mark really well. (it's the rattling kind of noise) Why do I think the tune up won't fix this? Any idea of what it will cost to have the stealership replace the timing chain if that is it? Please tell me I'm wrong!
