Transmission Fluid

So...I just found out that my transmission fluid has never been changed. Ever. I was under the impression that it should be changed every 50k; apparently my Father (The PO) thinks that it doesn't ever need to be changed. I have 172k on the Jeep, do I get it changed, or would changing it at this point be bad?

its hard to say. all you can do is try and find out. personally, if the trans is acting fine, id just leave it.

I should mention, the reason I am asking is because I'm going to commuting to college back and forth soon on the Highway. It's been more of a local vehicle for the past 5 years. I don't know if that will be harder or easier on the trans. Not my forte.

The highway mileage is easier than the city on the transmission, however, you need to do a drain, adjust bands, filter, and refill as soon as practical. Use ATF4.

take a look and a sniff at the fluid. It should ideally be translucent, red to pink, smell kind of sweet and definitely not burnt. If it looks good, I'd say it's safe to change with fresh ATF+4.
