My trans is starting to go im pretty sure, its starting to slip on 3rd gear and the others are starting to feel bad as well. So does anyone know if its repairable or if its better in the long run to just swap it out with a used one or get a remanded one, or have someone do it at a shop, any one know whats a good way to go with something like this. its a 97 ZJ with 160k and the good ol 5.2 V8
I replaced mine. One day I was unable to back up out of a parking space at work. Good thing I was there. Pushed it into the shop ordered a reman. and installed it. Worked like a charm ever since.
Since your case is a little different. I would pull the plug and check for metal. If there is IMO I would replace it. If not you can start with a solenoid body.
I have a 97 with 145K, and I had the same issue, plus a problem with the TC lockup and I'm having mine rebuilt right now. I live in Boston, but here are the quotes I got: AAMCO said it could range from $2000-2,500for a total rebuild, and the Dealership quoted me about $3000 for a reman. trans. + install. The dealer seemed to think it'd go for a while before it finally died, but I didn't wanna wait around for that to happen. I ended up finding a local guy who's doing it for $1000, and he'll warranty it for 6 months. I've heard that this 3rd gear slip is common with the 44RE trans.
As for my troubleshooting: I started by changing the filter and the fluid in the pan, and there was no change. 6 months later, got the whole system flushed and replaced with ATF4, and there was still no change. The problem was progressively getting worse, and it didn't show an codes so I decided to go with the rebuild.
raybestos clutches. steels and wavy lockrings, new bushings and thrust washers, and new rear and intermediate bands should run you about 200$ or so. the only tools you need for the simple rebuild of a chrysler tranny are a few sockets, a t-20 torx driver(i think t-20, might be 25), a slide hammer, snap ring pliers and lock ring pliers. that's it. if you can remember the order things came out in you can do this. (provided it's not the overdrive unit that's effed up, there is a special tool for that and the direct drive clutch apply/pack if i'm not mistaken)
i'll be going outside now to put mine back together real quick and then i'll pull it back apart with pics for you all to see how simple it really is on these guys.
