transmission band adjustment

So ive had this post in the "official" transmission band adjustment and no comments so here it is in a new post
I have the 46RE- RH tranny ( i believe .. 95 GC 5.2L v8 orvis). how hard is it to access the front band and what size socket do i need? I have a feeling ill have to order the socket online
also my transmission tends to not engage into 2nd gear sometimes. It revs high, around 2500-3000 and then itll engage. If i give it more gas itll usually engage at a higher rpm and itll be a more forceful shift. she has 145000km on her. does this sound like a tv cable problem or the bands?

pretty easy the front bands on the out side of the trans. forget what size, but it was a multi point a had already that worked.

you have a 46rh.
the 5.9 was the only jeep available with a 46re

right now i am forgetting what band does what, but that doesn't sound like the front band.
have you dropped the pan to see if there are any shavings?

if you have 145km on the original trans i think it past due for a rebuild.

Sounds like the tv cable needs adjusted, not bands. Though they are due at that mileage.

No, that's just nuts. Not even close to 'past due'.

That's only about 90k miles.

That tranny should last over 200k MILES (270,000 km) with regular maintenance.

That's a very good auto tranny. Strong.

I never relised there was a due date to rebuilds ? A transmission needs rebuilt when it needs rebuilt not at a certain mileage. Our 42re has 170k miles on it and it has absolutetly ZERO problems.

I was in the dealer the other day and they said my Jeep is due for a transmission fluid change and service.
I dont want to change the fluid and not touch the bands only to have to redue it all again to adjust the bands. like an extra 50$ in fluid.
ill try to adjust the TV cable and see if that does anything for it.

If you do the filter and fluid change that is a good time to do the band adjust. The rear band is accessed once you remove the pan and filter.

The band adjust requires 2 wrenches. One to loosen the locknut and the other for the adjustment screw. The adjust screw is a square head IIRC.

The front band adjustment is on the left side of the tranny. Loosen the locknut a few turns and loosen the adjustment screw a few turns. Now torque the adjustment screw to 72 inch pounds and then loosen the adjustment screw 2-1/2 turns. Hold the adjustment screw while you tighten the locknut.

For the rear band torque to 72 inch pounds and loosen 2 turns. This is for the 46RH

If you do have a 46RE loosen the front band 2-7/8th turn. The rear is as above.

IIRC If I recall correctly. Looking at a picture that I have it appears to be a square nut.

You can probably use a standard open end wrench. I have some sockets for square nuts. The main thing is to hold it, after the turn adjustment, to keep it from turning as you tighten the locknut.

How are you going to apply proper torque using an open end wrench?

It's really light torque. 72 inch pounds is virtually finger-tight all the way in, then you back it out the number of turns, hold it still, and tighten the locknut.

Make sure you use inch/pounds and not foot/pounds. Should translate to about 6.x foot/pounds.

Good point, as I have square nut sockets. What was I thinking. But.......

You can make a torque adapter for the open end wrench. Take a bolt, 2 washers and 2 nuts that fit the box end or other open end. Put washer on bolt and tighten with first nut. Place on wrench, add second washer and second nut and tighten down tight.

Now you use regular 6 or 12 point socket on bolt to apply torque. If you keep the wrench at a right angle to the torque wrench you do not need to make any torque calculations.

If you place the wrench where it lengthens or shortens the torque wrench then you need to do a torque extension calculation.

Here is a calculator you can use to do the calculation.

Torque Extension Calculator

Input the torque wrench length and the extended length or shortened length with the torque adapter installed. Input the desired torque and the calculator will give you the torque value that you need to set the wrench to.

This is what a store bought adapter looks like.

Torque Adapter

I just buy bolts, washers and nuts and make what I need. I keep a few on hand for that special case. And the price is right.

I have a 44RE. Does anyone know the amount of turns out on the bands for this tranny? I adjusted the TV cable, however my 1-2 shift is sooooo slow, yet my 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are nice and quick. I'm scared my trans is worn out. My dad just bought a 5.9 ZJ and the shifts in that thing are enough to make anyone jealous.
